Hello Eagle Eyed SKSs,
Just how bad can an enumerator mess up a spelling? I have this family, top of
the next page:
1900 > NEW YORK > ONEIDA > 1-WD ROME Series: T623 Roll: 1132 Page: 128
Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
KENNEFICK PATRICK 55 M W IREL NY ONEIDA 1-WD ROME 1900
A few of the children I am having trouble finding in 1910. I may have found one
but the spelling is way off:
1910 > NEW YORK > QUEENS > 4-WD QUEENS Series: T624 Roll: 1068 Page: 127
Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
KERWOICK RICHARD 39 M W IREL NY QUEENS 4-WD QUEENS 1910
Problem is the handwriting for Richard is pretty clear. However of all the
censi there is only one Kerwoick listed on http://www.heritagequest.com. So I am
thinking they could be the same person. Problem is a blacksmith in 1900 to
police officer in 1910?
How about you.

I'm not sure, either. In 1900, it indicates that Richard is married,
but has 1 for the number of years (but no wife shown for him, or his two
married brothers). In 1910, it shows Richard and Katherine Kerwoick
have been married for 8 years. I can see a change in occupation - he
could have been training with his brother as a blacksmith, but then
found better pay as a police officer (and less call for a blacksmith in
1910 Queens). But the discrepancy in number of years married, the big
change in surname (it's not just the indexers reading it wrong, it's
definitely written as Kerwoick - for 1920, ancestry has him as Kerwick,
alternatively Kenwick).
And so, I went back to 1900 and looked for Richard Kerwick or Kenwick.
Found a Richard Kerwick, aged 29, policeman, born in Ireland, living
with his mother, Mary Kerwick, widow, in the Bronx. I think this is the
same as Richard Kerwoick of 1910:
Year: 1900; Census Place: Bronx, New York, New York; Roll: T623 1126;
Page: 14A; Enumeration District: 1010.
There is a Richard Kenefick in Schenectady, New York in the 1920 Census,
the right age to be the Richard Kennefick of 1900 - and he's a
blacksmith. Problem is that I can't find him in the 1910 census.
Here's his 1920 info so you can check him out:
Year: 1920;Census Place: Schenectady Ward 7, Schenectady, New York;
Roll: T625_1263; Page: 10A; Enumeration District: 151
Good luck,
Cathy

I also noticed how in 1900, the oldest daughter (Ella, aged 18) was born
in New York, but her parents have only been in the U.S. for 16 years.
