Practice of the mid 1800's

I have found two sets of ancestors living with attorneys in the 1850
Indiana, both families are later living in the area on their own
properties. Both families are from the Pennsylvania/ Maryland /Virginia
areas.

In the mid 1800's, was it a common practice for the attorney to board
the immigrating family while he was looking for and closing on the
family's new home?

Check Indiana's history. In Michigan, the state paid a fee to people that
sponsored new immigrants to their homes, Attorney's often performed this
service, but in reality anyone could sponsor an immigrant.
