George T Vardon in American Civil War

Legg inn av cecilia » 27 mai 2007 17:16:25

Ancestry.com shows a Civil War pension card for
George T Vardon,
widow Mary J,
service B 42 Ill. Inf
date of filing 1863(?) Jan 24,
application number 1170
certificate number 2178

In Ancestry's list of U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865, the details
of his regiment are the same (differently formatted), and his rank,
when both joining and leaving, was Captain. The film number is M539
roll 93.

Short of going to Washington DC and looking at the pension file, is
there any way I can know the full name of George T Vardon of the 42nd
Illinois Infantry?

Reason for interest:

I know nothing after 1847 of George Tarbut (or Tarbutt or Tarbuth)
Vardon, baptised 6 Jan 1803, St Anne's Soho (IGI), educated at
Charterhouse and Westminster (Record of Old Westminsters), went to
Sandhurst (Canadian National Archives biographical note using
information from his son-in-law in the early 20C. They also refer to
him as Captain George Vardon - I failed to find him in english Army
Lists, but may have been looking in the wrong period), married Mary
Jane Southerden in Barony, Lanark 16 Jul 1833 (IGI), and later worked
in the Indian Department in Canada (Dictionary of Canadian Biography
online).

Although I have found family trees of some of his descendents, eg
http://www.sewellgenealogy.com/p257.htm#i1581 (in which his middle
name is given as Talbot), I have not yet found any with a date of
death for George Tarbut Vardon.

This George T. Vardon cannot be the man you're looking for as he was
from Cincinnati, Ohio and died in 1862:

Am I mis-reading Cecilia's msg? It seems like this could certainly
be her Captain Varden. This is a widow's pension card-- and it
doesn't say where she is- or for that matter, where he resided when he
enrolled. But it doesn't help her with the name.

I would think the pension file is your best bet. [though if it is just
the middle name you want, his enlistment/commission papers might have
his full name. A private researcher would probably get those for you
for a nominal fee.]

NARA will copy the pension file for a fee-- and a private researcher
might be an option. [I haven't looked at rates for either lately-- 10
yrs ago it was only $10 or $20 for a pension file through NARA. ] The
one I got was worth a million $ in information. It included the
couple's *only copy* of their wedding certficate,[and the letter that
accompanied it that asked for its return]. There were affidavits from
several family members, some detailing the soldier's service & other's
talking about what the widow had been going through; it detailed the
widow's 3 young children (a 4yr old and 2yr old twins), her several
adresses over the next few years, and ended with her marriage to
another veteran.

Next you might try researching the Regiment. Since he was a Capt,
someone is likely to have eulogized him in their history. A chance
the middle name might be spelled out.

I'd also check home town newspapers from about 2 weeks after he died
for a month or so. Then starting with Decoration days - May 5 1866
in Waterloo, NY- but national on May 30 1868- I'd bet someone wrote
about the Captain.

I much appreciate the URL from Hunterglenn, which gives me a death
date.

But I agree it could easily be "my" man (though I need the second name
to be sure). The family seems to have been somewhat mobile - his own
birth, marriage and career life were England, Scotland and Canada, and
his son died in Rome, having had children, by a wife born in Hong
Kong, born in Scotland, the USA and England. For George to move from
Canada to the USA, before or to join the Civil War, is not surprising.

He's only a third cousin to my great-grandfather, so I'll ned to psych
myself into spending money - I might wait (probably for years, but I'm
a patient soul) until I or another member of the tribe is in
Washington. Thanks for all the suggestions for where I might find his
second name.

C: This might help:
http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/milit ... ml#pension

But be aware that NARA recently had some publicity about changing fees
and the change prompted LOT$ of comments. Might want to check.
