I put my photos up on http://www.webshots.com . You can get a lot of space for

photos for free and people can view them and download them if they want.
I find this much easier for people with dial up connections as they
only download what they want. You can also make your album private so
only people you send an invitation to can view it. Also, they have a
GREAT screen saver program that you can download photos from them or use
your own. The same photos can be used for your desktop if you want. If
you need more space you can get it for a small fee per year. I really
like it. You can view one of my albums at
http://family.webshots.com/album/486071215lZPmiV
and from there you can go back to the main page and see the rest of what
I have. I have a lot of tombstone photos up and you may find it of
interest.
Have a great Day

In general, pictures are binaries, and binaries are only allowed on Usenet
in newsgroups that specifically allow them. Far better to put them on
web space and post the pointers/URLs in the newsgroup.

Newsgroups are designed to be a text-based. There are a lot of
users that are still using dial-up to access them, and in
someplaces you pay for your internet by the amount of information
you download. Posting photos can have a seriously deleterious
effect on their access.

There are a lot of photo-hosting websites: you can post links to
those pictures. That way the integrity of the newsgroup is
maintained, and those interested in seeing the photos can do so.

I've recently started a genealogy blog; it's easy to use, easy to
upload pictures to, and it's free. I'll be reworking my website to
host gedcoms, and use the blog for anecdotal histories, pictures,
and updates. The blog also allows family members to leave
comments.

You've already gotten feedback about using one of the
canonical photo sharing services and posting pointers.

Besides USENET, a useful place to post pointers is at
http://www.Linkpendium.com. There's a page for just about
every Western surname, and you can use the add-a-link
tool to add a pointer to your pictures.

That's a durable way to get your pictures up on The
Net and indexed so other genealogists can find them.

Cheers, B.
