Mattie a nickname for Ellen ?

Legg inn av jj206 » 15 apr 2007 10:29:54

Hi All,

I am looking at my family tree in the 1870 US
Census. The parents are Horace and Lydia Allen
in Madison, Lake Co, Ohio.

There are 4 known kids there. But there is an
unknown child there age 15 and she is listed
after the patriarch Asa Talcott. Lydia was
Asa's daughter. Anyway, I went back to the
1860 US Census and did not find any Mattie
Savage, but I did find an Ellen Savage in a
Orphanage in New York that fits her age.

Series: M653 Roll: 804 Page: 578

Is there an unusual amount of Ellens and Marys
on that census page ? Did they just give her
a name at the orphanage ?

So far, I have not found an relatives in my
tree with the last name of Savage.

Looks like there was a huge number of orphans
in New York after the cholera epidemic.

So is Mattie a nickname for another name ?

If I search for Mattie, does Mathilda also get searched ?

The article above mentions half orphans and I am unsure
how to spot half orphans in the US Census.

Thanks for any info.

Jonathan

Yes, it's often a nickname for "Madeline." Which kind of works
with your "Ellen," too: 'mad-ellen.'

Martha has also been mentioned. I wonder if Matilda might be a candidate?

Mattie is usually an abbreviation of Matilda but it could have been
acquired for any number of reasons not connected to the child's actual
name.

William Talcott married Almira Savage on 7 Feb 1864 in Lake Co, OH. Looking
up Almira Savage in the 1860 census she has a 5 year old sister named Martha
Savage. Both Almira and Martha were born in NY.
