Looking for military service information about Sgt. Carter to complete
documentation for his grandchildren. The official military records
were destroyed by fire in 1973.

Family tradition has his death in Paris on 1 Aug 1944 (date from
military-provided marker). However, US forces did not reach Paris
until 24 Aug 1944. If 1 Aug 1944 is the correct date of death, then
he would have been in the area of the Périers-St. Lô Road (10 Jul - 20
Jul, "Breakout and Pursuit", Martin Blumenson, p141-142) or as part of
Operation Cobra (ibid, Ch. 12, 60th Infantry Regiment mentioned on p.
231; rest of chapter, follow 9th Infantry Division movement).
"Périers" is close enough to be transliterated to "Paris" by an
American reading a telegram or by the usual losses in oral history...

There are few surviving members of the 60th Infantry Regiment (I had
no luck in finding anyone at the WWII Memorial dedication a couple of
years ago), but maybe you know one (or have his papers - memoirs or a
diary would be an excellent reference).

Sgt. Carter was friends with someone from OH (Canton?) who visited the
family in TN, possibly around 1950 (+/- a couple of years?).

Thanks for any info you may have or find.

John
