Help needed with a USA marriage circa 1885.
Hi,
After a number of years searching US for a Henry Baxter (Born Lancashire,
England 1841, Parents John & Mary Baxter) who emigrated about 1880,
Liverpool > New York (I think) > Sacramento, I have finally found him on the
1900 US Census with a wife, Annie (from Nova Scotia), in Sacramento. I would
dearly love to find other info on this couples time in the US, e.g. marriage
around 1885 and details of any children, death etc. but find I have
exhausted (or not properly used!) Ancestor.co.uk. For instance It appears to
me that the US 1890 census is largely missing (?), also marriage records ...
certainly for California where they perhaps married ... or maybe they
married in New York where he may of landed? Henry was a metal
turner/machinist so I guess he worked for one of the Rail Road compannies
based in Sacramento.
If anyone can offer any advice on how I can further my research into Henry
Baxter and his wife Annie I would be most grateful.
Best Regards,
Dave H.

Much the best is to post the results to the group
because they get archived for reference in case of a computer HD melt down
and our collective knowledge is far greater than one of us
and descendants and cousins may find you via the archives too

I wasn't able to find too much, but I did find death dates for Henry and
Annie.
Date of Death Surname First name
26-Mar-1901 BAXTER Anna (Mrs.)
4-Jul-1901 BAXTER Harry
A few additional details are available at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905/Sacra ... aw-Bea.htm
I would guess that since Henry and Annie were only married 15 years as of
1900, that the 2 children mentioned in the census were from a previous
marriage for Annie.
Your best bet might be to try to find an obituary before spending money on a
death certificate. Here are a few links to look-up volunteers.

Re: Help needed with a USA marriage circa 1885.
Hi Dave, I guess you are aware of the submitted information on Ancestry?
Showing that Henry had been married twice before? As your name appears to be
in the list of name I am guessing that it is your submission? I notice that
Tara has been able to find death dates though.
Good luck,
Anne

Hi Dave,
Found this on rootsweb..
d. 4-Jul-1901; BAXTER, Harry; age, 60; CAUC; M (married); W; b. England;
Occ: Machinist.
AND
d. 26-Mar-1901; BAXTER, Anna (Mrs.); age, 52; CAUC; F; M; b.Nova Scotia;
Occ: Housewife.
They both died in Sacramento County so you can request a death
certificate from them.

There are also a number of other Baxter's listed.
