What does NY Vital Records need for a death cert?
I'm in the process of writing NY's Vital Records on Worth St. for a
death certificate.
What information will they need for a death that occured after '42?
Birthdates weren't very important in Russia around 1885, so I'd have
to be very vague, which means they could have multiple choices.

It's little details like that that's keeping me from even trying to get

minimum would be.
If the death happened before 1949, then you'd need a different department:
http://nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalr ... eath.shtml
This department will do searches, but as you can see, it's going to cost
you, and you'll need to give them as much information as possible. Even
though this seems to be the more expensive route, since you don't know
all that much on the deceased, then this is what I'd try first - if
nothing else, you eliminate the years prior to 1949 for the death year.
I did try to see if there was a telephone number for the department of
health, so you could ask someone there about 1940 and after death
certificates, but I didn't see one. What is it with government offices
that don't want to be telephoned? There is an e-mail form, where you
can contact the commissioner of the health department.
You could also try Vital Rec:
http://vitalrec.com/ny.html
But I've got a feeling that they need a good bit of information as well,
so that might not work in this instance.
Good luck,
Cathy

The NYT Obits. I see mention of an index to paid death notices.
I seem to recall a NYT publication of obits which included any obit
published - am I remembering correctly? If so, and his death got
reported in the NYT, then I've got a lead. I'll go find a friendly

That technique worked (and was a major breakthru to three branches of
my family) for Elmira, NY, but we're talking Brooklyn here - the

OK - now pooped up on the Eagle. Any death I'm interested in would
have occurred since '42. The Eagle died in '51. So, up to '05 is
electronically searchable, '42 onward is not. I would have to go to
the Eagle collection at BPL and go thru each edition. <sigh> - Mike

The good news is -- it isn't as difficult as it sounds.
First, very few places are going to make you flip real
newsprint that old, so you're scrolling microfilm. Then, by
1940, deaths & obits would all be on one page of the paper.
Once you've figured out whether that page is the 3rd page
of section B or the fourth page of Sect A, or the 6th page
of Section C, it's almost painless.
However, drop by http://www.usgenweb.org/ny -- the Brooklyn
webmaster has an amazing lot of info on-line and a fairly
decent sized collection of Kind Souls who have private
resources. You could get lucky.
