Have one of those good news/bad news days? (G)
_Good News:_ I found on-line gravestone photos for some of
my family members.
_Bad News:_ The photos are awful and all the old ones are
next to illegible with blips of sunlight blooming
here'n'there and the rest in dark dank shadow.
_Good News:_ I found on-line obits on some folks
_Bad News:_ the info in the obits doesn't match any other
record on 'em.
_Good News:_ I found ages on a list of children in the 1860
_Bad News:_ the 1870 has matching ages and completely
different names; the 1880 has the right names and really
wrong ages; they're not-found in 1900. -- OK, one of 'em is
one of those illegible tombstones, but still...
_Good News:_ there's a family writeup in one of those mug
books
_Bad News:_ Most of the catalog "hits" on the name of that
book appear to be references to it, and two years after the
cited date.

Good News, Bad News Number One -
Good News - In 1950 I found old German script letters from Germany addressed
to my grandmother Beer/Schuster here in the USA dated in early 1900's.
Bad News - Did nothing with them until 1992. Wrote a letter in English to
postmaster in the small town my grandmother lived in, and asked if there
were any Schuster or Beer descendants still living there in the area.
Good News - Postmaster had lived in the surrounding area almost all his
life, and had been postmaster for the town for 23 years.
Bad News - Postmaster could not read English.
Good News - Postmaster's neighbor could read English.
Good News - Postmaster's mother was a Beer! And a block away from his home
was a Schuster! Cousins everywhere!
Have enjoyed visiting with the families almost every other year since then.
Lots of Kaffee und Kuchen after noon meal on Sundays.
Good News, Bad New Number Two -
Good News - Cousin went to Germany for a vacation in 1992, and found our
Pessarra surname in the Hamburg telephone directory.
Bad News - Cousin did nothing about it.
Good News - When cousin passed away, his wife gave the addresses to me in
1998. I wrote letters to the two addresses.
Bad News - One addressee was deceased.
Good News - One was still living and finally wrote back. Through that
letter we have found and visited with many of our distant cousins, and are
making contact with more every year.
So, Cheryl, you do have my sympathy. But, keep on looking. And, good luck.

Not long ago I found a photo of a grave marker in the "right" cemetery
with the "right" name. Went to the cemetery and scoured the small area
it was supposed to be in but didn't find it. Subsequently checked the
dates shown on the stone and they didn't match *anything* I had. BUT...
while I was at the cemetery, found a huge memorial that probably does
belong to a predecessor. Then got all ready to go back and do some more
searching, and it snowed heavily.
