Greetings
I'm looking for the census images for 1860 and 1870 for James Bartholomew
and Polly Bartholomew (nee. Lawson) They had at least four children,
Malinda, Emma, and I only have the initials for the other two, BF
Bartholomew and EW Bartholomew. There may well have been more children.
Malinda was born about 1860. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
Oh, Malinda was born in Virginia, but by the 1880 Census she is in Kentucky,
and married to Martin VanBuren Berry.
Again, thank you in advance.

Re: Greetings
Can you give any other details, such as the citations for where Martin
and Malinda were living in Kentucky in the 1880 census? I can find them
in 1900, but the census indicates that they've only been married for 10
years, and there is a marriage record for a M. V. Berry and Malinda
Salyer in 1890 in Lawrence County, KY. Is it possible that your Malinda
was married twice? Or is this the wrong Martin V. Berry in Kentucky?
I'm trying to work backwards with Malinda, hoping to eventually find her
parents.

I guess the cousin I was asking this for found out through someone else.
Sorry for the bother, but yeah, she was married to a David Salyers prior to
her marriage to Martin Van Buren Berry. Thanks for the time and effort and
it was Laurence County.

Re: Greetings
And you're stuck in the middle? Thanks for the additional info, I'll
hunt around and see what I can dig up. So far, everything on Malinda
indicates that her parents were born in Virginia, but I'm not finding
them there. Right now, I'm thinking that it's probably a case of them
being indexed incorrectly or the enumerator(s) misspelling Bartholomew.

Re: Greetings
I'm beginning to wonder if the Bartholomew name isn't connected in the
way your cousin thinks that it is - I can't find anyone of that name who
comes close to being the James, Polly, Emma, Malinda or other two
mentioned. I've tried doing a search with a wildcard (Bar*) in VA, WV
and KY, and nothing.
However, there IS a Malinda Lawson, aged 10, living with her parents
James and Mary Lawson, in Lawrence County, KY in the 1870 Federal
Census. By 1880 though, I can't find this family, and the only Malinda
of the right age is Malinda Salyer, aged 22, living as a servant in
someone else's home, with a daughter, Mary, aged 2.
James, Mary and Malinda (and their older children, I didn't look at the
younger ones) were all born in Virginia, which matches the information
for Malinda later on. But, I can't find the family in Virginia in the
1860 Federal Census.
Malinda Berry did die after KY started to require death certificates, so
your cousin could order hers to see if the names of her parents are
listed - it's possible that her mother remarried at some point, and was
either Mary (Polly) Bartholomew first, then a Lawson, or vice versa, and
Lawson isn't Polly's maiden name at all. It is interesting to note that
there were some Lawson's in Russell County, VA at the same time as there
were Salyers, and the two families seemed to intermarry a few times.
Here's the information for ordering Malinda's death certificate:
Name: Malinda Berry
Death Date: 18 Feb 1938
Death Place: Boyd
Age: 077
Residence: Ashland
Volume: 7
Certificate: 3153
Order from:
Department for Public Health
Vital Records
275 E Main St - IE-A
Frankfort, KY 40621-0001
MAIN TELEPHONE: 502-564-4212
FACSIMILE: 502-227-0032
HOURS: 8AM-3PM
General Note: The fee is $6.00 per name.
There was another Malinda Berry, but since Martin V. Berry died in Boyd,
it seems more likely that this is the right person.
Sorry that I couldn't have been of further help to you and your cousin,
but maybe something will turn up in Malinda's death certificate.

Re: Greetings
the image has been sent. Here's the URL for the Lawrence County, KY
GenWeb site:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~kylawren/lawrence.html
They've got some marriages online, but none yet beginning with the
letter 'L'. No Bartholomews prior to the 1900s, but there are a few
people who do marriage look-ups, so you might want to see if there are
any Lawson/Bartholomew marriages floating around. Or if any of them are
in the cemeteries.
If you or your cousin decide to go for Malinda's death certificate and
luck out by finding the full names of both parents on there, let me
know. This has been pretty intriguing, and I like a good puzzle <grin>.
Thanks,
Cathy
