Vawter family helping protect America for over 200 years

Soldiers and their wars:

French and Indian War

William Vawter, son of Edward2

In 1758, an expedition, the second one, was set on foot for the "capture
of Fort Duquesne, under General Forbes, a British officer. Washington
was commander of the Virginia troops which consisted of two regiments,
his own and Col. William Byrds, about two thousand men in all. The order
books show as follows:

October. Daniel McClayland, Colonel Byrd's Regiment, 1759. William
Vawter, sergeant, John Furnes (Furnance) Hogg's Rangers.

Orange Co., Order Book, Page 121, Oct 1759, William Vawter proved that
he served his enlistment out in Capt. Hogg's Company of Rangers in the
year 1758, as sergeant, and that he never received any land in
consideration thereof.

Dunsmore War (Western VA frontier (WV)) 1774:

Henderson, West Virginia was settled by John Henderson and probably his
father James. John was a respected citizen and Indian fighter and served
in the battle of Point Pleasant, VA in 1774. William Boulware Vawter b.
26 May 1765 Orange Co., VA d. 15 Nov 1822, Monroe Co., VA. William m. 12
Feb 1795 Margaret Henderson b. 12 Feb 1771, Greenbrier Co., VA (WV) d. 8
Sep 1853, Madison Co., VA; dau. of John and Anne (Givens) Henderson of
Point Pleasant VA (WV).

In the spring of 1774, a general Indian War, (called Dunsmore's War)
broke out along the Western frontier. The bloody battle at Point
Pleasant was the decisive battle that ended the war. The Virginia
Militia lost 150 of the 700 troops including their respected commander,
Col. Charles Lewis. The Indian losses were heavier, but exactly how many
is not known because the Indians weighted the dead with rocks and placed
them in the river so the Virginians could not see the extant of their
loss.

Revolutionary War

These are the known Revolutionary Soldiers of Vawter lines. Some are not
proven to which family they belong, additional research is needed.

Jesse4 Vawter, David3, John2, Barth1 (No military record is found, this
is found his own hand and diary)

From his written history - In Dec 1780 he went back to VA and in 1781 he
married 29 Mar 1781. He was drafted for a two month's tour of service in
VA. By Jan 1782, after the birth of son John, he headed the 300 miles
back to Holston.

David4 possibly the son of David3, John2, Barth1

Vauters, David, 1 Va, State Reg.

Jesse's Vawters military record has not been located but in the book
Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in
Indiana by Mrs. Roscoe O'Byrne, Indiana DAR, 1938, page 367, we find
Jesse listed. Further research of the Vawters now shows this enlistment
seems to be David Vawter, his brother. Jesse by his own words states he
was drafted for 2 months in 1781, probably for militia or guard duty.

Vawter, Jesse, Jefferson County. Born 2 Dec 1755, Virginia.

Service - Enlisted in 1777 in Capt. John Camp's co, 1st Virg. Regt.,
under Col. George Gibson.

Proof- Virg. Mag. Of History and Biography 1893-1894, DAR No.

Died March 20, 1838. Buried Wirt Cemetery. Gov. marker placed by John
Paul Chapter DAR.

Military Secretary of the War Dept. in Washington DC, in 1905, on the
service of David Vawter. The letters states "The name David Vawter, nor
the name of Jesse Vawter has been found on the rolls in this office. It
is shown by the records, however, that one David Vauters served as
private in Captain John Camp's Company in the First Virginia State
Regiment, commanded by Colonel George Gibson. He enlisted Mar 1, 1777,
to serve three years, and his name last appears on the company muster
roll for February, 1778. The date of his separation from the service in
not stated."
