I am looking for the parents of two boys Ike Barlett (Isaac?) and Jacob
Barlett. Per my mothers notes they were from Lebanon Pennsylvania, and
were orphaned when their parents died in a smallpox epidemic.
After the death of their parents they were raised by a Joseph Lewellen.
They move to and lived in Indiana untill their deaths.
Jacob Barlett b 10/08/1869 d 04/08/1958 was married in Uniondale,
Indiana to a Sophia Frances Sutton from Mercer County (Celina), Ohio.
(Uniondale is south of Fort Wayne in Wells county.)
Ike (Isaac? Isack?) b 1866 d Jun 22, 1949.
The only other information I have is that some of the names of the
children of Jacob look like they could be family surnames. Chancey
Vernon Fredrick. May be a false lead.
Thank you Keith Nuttle

Re: BARLETT
According to the 1880 Federal census, when the boys are living with
Joseph and his family in Indiana, they're shown as his nephews.
Year: 1880; Census Place: Lancaster, Wells, Indiana; Roll: T9_323;
Family History Film: 1254323; Page: 54.2000; Enumeration District: 142
Joseph Lewellen, 35, farmer, born PA, parents born NJ
Emma, wife, 27, born PA, parents born PA
Amy, daughter, 11, born PA, parent born PA
Elizabeth, daughter, 5, born NJ, parents born PA
George, son, 3, born IN, parents born PA
Susan, daughter, 2, born IN, parents born PA
Isaac Barlett, nephew, 14, born PA, parents born PA
Jacob Barlett, nephew, 10, born PA, parents born PA
For 1870:
Year: 1870; Census Place: Reading Ward 2, Berks, Pennsylvania; Roll:
M593_1307; Page: 736;
Barlet, Ephron, 40, can't make out occupation, born PA
Cath., 23, keeps house, born PA
Isaac, 4, born PA
Jacob, 1, born PA
Joseph Lewellen was living in Philadelphia, with a different wife:
Year: 1870; Census Place: Philadelphia Ward 28 Dist 92 (2nd Enum),
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1444; Page: 37
Lewellen, Joseph, 25
Elizabeth, 23
Anna, 3
Amy, 1
And this is as a far back as I can get. I can't find Ephron Barlett
earlier than 1870, nor can I find a Lewellen/Lewellyn family that has
both a Joseph and a Catherine/Catharine in it. There's a family in
Philadelphia that seems to have the correct Joseph, but the female who
would match with Cath. Barlett is named Mary - could be the same girl,
and she was known as Mary to her parents and as Catherine to her husband.
Hope that helps,
Cathy

Re: BARLETT
I tried Ephram Barlett and found a hit in 1860 in Berks County. If it's
the same man, then his age is off by a few years
Year: 1860; Census Place: Reading, South East Ward, Berks, Pennsylvania;
Roll: M653_1077; Page: 1073
Ephram Barlett, 36, cordswainer, born PA
Susannah, 39, born PA
Henry F., 15, apprentice c., born PA
Pracila E., 10, born PA
In 1850, his name is written as Ephraim Barlet:
Year: 1850; Census Place: Cumru, Berks, Pennsylvania; Roll: M432_754;
Page: 336;
Ephraim Barlet, 25, farmer, born PA
Susan, 29, born PA
Henry F., 5, born PA
Priscilla, can't make out age, born PA

I didn't have much luck with finding their parents, but I did find a few
more details about Isaac. He's in Wells County, IN in the 1900 - 1930
census. In 1900, he gives his DOB as Dec 1865. His wife is Mary M. Ernst.
Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name: Isaac Barlett
Spouse Name: Mary Ernst
Marriage Date: 20 Feb 1893
Marriage County: Wells
Source Title 1: Wells County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Index to Marriage Record 1837 - 1920 Inclusive Vol
Source Title 3: W. P. A. Original Record Located: County Clerk's O
Book: C- 8
OS Page: 81
In 1910, they both say it's their second marriage, so this is probably his
first marriage:
Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941
Name: Katherine Bickel
Spouse Name: Isaac Barlett
Marriage Date: 13 Jun 1890
Marriage County: Wells

Mary died somewhere between the 1910 and 1920 census. Isaac and Mary had 2
daughters, Pearl, b. Oct 1895, and Ethel, b. July 1899. One assumes Isaac
died in Wells Co. If you could find a death certificate, it might give his
parents name.
