Hello SKSs,

I need your opinion. What is the occupation of the fellow listed below.
He works for the city. Is it Chamberain???? In 1910, he was a clerk
at City Hall (and under E. B. Kenifie).

1920 > NEW YORK > OSWEGO > 5-WD OSWEGO Series: T625 Roll: 1254 Page: 154
Surname Given Name Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
KENFICH EDWARD 57 M W NY NY OSWEGO 5-WD OSWEGO 1920

For the curious his other names and the year of the census.
Edward Patrick Kenific
Eddie Kenefic, on the 1870 Census
Edward P. Kenifie, on the 1880 Census
Edward P. Kenefic, on the 1900 Census
E. B. Kenifie, on the 1910 Census
Edward Kenfich, on the 1920 Census

TIA

I'd say it looks like Chamberlain for the city

I enlarged it to 400%; Chamberlain is the obvious word, but
I'm not too happy with it?

The 'h' is a bit sharper on the hump that others on the
page, there is no 'e' in the word, and if it's supposed to
end in ain, the i is not dotted in the same way as other
dotted i on the page (and he doesn't dot all of them). If I
could twist cliambrdam into a real word I'd be a little
happier with that -- at least there's a dot in the right
place to be over an i.

FWIW.

OTOH, DID the city of Oswego have an office called
Chamberlain? If it did, and if there's not a second one
listed in the census ...

From the City of Oswego web site at;

http://www.oswegony.org/DEPT_chamberlain.html

you will find;

The Chamberlain is the fiscal officer for the City of Oswego. Our office
is the custodian of all city funds and we are responsible for general
accounting functions which include:

That suggests that he was indeed the "Chamberlain"

To me the 'h' doesn't compare unfavorably (except for slant) to the 'h'
in "Millhand" somewhat above. I perceive it ending in 'ain', but then I
bet my handwriting is worse than yours. :) The varied slant in the word
suggests he wasn't writing on a good surface, i.e. didn't have his
clipboard or whatever securely on something solid when he wrote it.
I too vote for "chambrlain".
