I'm using ancestry.com for doing most of my research. The most frustrating
task for me is trying to get a marriage certificate for someone going back a
100 years or more when the dates, places, aren't known. So basically you
have to search the whole country over 10 or 20 years. I did use to narrow
things down a bit but got stuck on one when I found them they got married 20
years before their first child and moved from one end of the country to the
other! Add to this a couple of common names and the task becomes huge.
Why don't Ancestry.com or others have a decent search where you can enter
the names of both partners and it will do an intelligent search matching
district, volume and pages? Or at least score the finds where more things
match. Are there other UK searches which have a feature like this on the old
format data (where they didn't show the spouse)?
I would do my own searches if I could get hold of the index data (not
interested in the images). S&N do seem to have some but at ridiculous
prices. Are there any other sets of just the name, year, quarter, volume and
page?
Thanks

Have you tried FreeBMD?

original records are held locally and not many are on line

Re: UK Marriage Record Search
Thanks for the info.
Actually I did find the one I was after. It turned out it was their second
child 20 years after they got married not the first. They moved from Epsom
to up near Kendal. Over to the USA for 5 years then back to Bournemouth!
