Can anyone find this family in 1860? I'm sorry there's not more to go on.
The unknown father is supposed to have died during the Civil War. The only
one I can find in 1880 is George W. who is still in Howell Co, MO. He's a
hired hand in the home of Abram and Betty Combs? Pernel.

Have you looked in Arkansas? If George was born there 8 years before the 1870
census, it seems possible that they lived there 10 years before it.

Clemont is a female in that census, AND she was born in IL, as is the
Clementin that you found in the 1870 census. Since you don't know when
the family moved from Illinois to Arkansas (where George was born), the
family could have just as likely been in IL in the 1860 census as in AR.
The one place they most likely would NOT have been would have been
Missouri.
The main problem with the family that Alida found is that the mother is
not from TN, as is shown with Sarah Lewis, and while it's possible that
all of those children died, it's not as likely. Still, she's the
closest match to the Clementin that you found in the 1870. It's
possible that in 1860 she was either called by another name, or their
entry is too faint or mangled to read.
A look at the GenWeb site for Howell County
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~mohowell/index.htm) led to another website
(http://www.howellcountymo.com/index.html) that had a connection to a
web site for the state of Missouri where you can search death records
and see the actual death certificate.
George W. Lewis died December 24, 1930, in Howell County, MO, so you
should be able to find him in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census
records. Also, a link led to a marriage index for Howell County, which
shows a marriage between a G. W. Lewis and a Arminta I. Smith on Nov 8,
1886.
Unfortunately, John Lewis, the person who gave the information for
George's death certificate, did not know the names of his parents.
George's wife was deceased by this time. It looks as though John and
George both lived in West Plains, MO. George was buried in Little Zion
something (the last word is hard to read) on Dec 25, 1930. his date of
birth is given as December 20, 1860, which makes him a bit older than
the age given in the 1870 census, and his birth place is given as Howell
County, MO, although since the informant didn't know the names of the
parents, it probably that he erred with this information. There isn't a
cemetery listing at the GenWeb site for a Little Zion, but there was a
Little Zion Baptist Church in Howell County, and it could be that George
was buried in the church cemetery.
You can search at:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resource ... es/#search
This is the citation for George's family in the 1910 Federal Census:
Year: 1910; Census Place: North Howell, Howell, Missouri; Roll:
T624_784; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 80; Image: 802.
I cannot find anything for Sarah or Clementine Lewis.

The family Alida found is still in Illinois in 1870. And in that 1870 census
Clemont is a male, so that can't be the right family.
The death certificate says he was buried in Little Zion Douglass. It's a
cemetery in Douglas Co, MO. I found the listing online but George and
Arminta are the only Lewis entries there. If other members of the family are
buried there there are no gravestones for them.
1860. I've also looked for Sarah in the 1850 Illinois census without any
luck.

Thanks for looking. I figure they were missed or are on an illegible page in
