Is Anyone Else Having Trouble Getting Off of Everton's Spam

Legg inn av Gjest » 10 jan 2007 03:26:10

Almost a year ago I registered for Everton's site. After going
through the registration process and finding out they lied about what
was available without fee, I took my ball and went home.

Now, all of a sudden, I am inundated with spam from
WorldVitalRecords.com under the auspices that they have "partnered"
with Everton to provide online genealogy databases.

Being familiar with the tricks to verifiy email addresses, I don't
click on the "unsubscribe" link -- I call Everton. The lady I talked
to on the telephone did not deny giving my email address to a
third-party and said she would take care of the problem right away.

So the mailings stopped for about a week (for awhile I was getting
several a day), and now they've started back up again.

Frankly, I think this is a tacky way for any company to do business,
especially after the fraudulent misrepresentations on their website
last year. I haven't purchased their magazine since.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I'd also like to point out that this email address was spam free until
I used it to register with Everton. Considering recent events, I
can't help but wonder who else they thought might be interested in it.

So no one else is receiving these? Or no one else is bothered by the
practice?

Yup - Bad enough that I'm getting the spam but I'm getting duplicates
to more than one email address. I did sign up for the Family History
Network (which no longer exists) in 2004 and see a mention of Everton
in their subscription response. WorldVitalRecords must be picking up
email addresses from other places.

Considering all the other spam I get every day (well over 100 spams),
it's just a mere drop in the bucket. I do have SpamArrest to block
spam to my personal email address but have no spam blocker on my work
email address (boss chose not to).

Are you saying you used your WORK email address to sign up for
genealogy stuff?
Er....no offense, but have you considered a new email address, free and
clear of notoriety? For instance, I use one for NGs that I never
respond to.
Might I suggest a new email like 'Sherrygoofingoffatwork@hotmail.com'?
Then you'll nip that spam issue in the bud. Granted, you have to let
the genealogy world know you've changed emails, but it only takes a
short time to do that---maybe you can do it at lunch!

And as for doing your NG stuff with your personal email address whilst
at work, I've little sympathy--nor do I suspect your employer would
either!
[note: only partially kettle/pot, as I am admittedly at work as I type
this...but refer you back to my first sentence, which deals with the
spam issue. I dont' get spam at work cuz I'm not silly enough to use
my work email to sign up for things and/or silly enough to complain
that I AM getting spam at my 'personal' email whilst working].

Amazing --

Not only did she *not* say that, you've completely missed the point of
the thread. Or can I assume by your response that you believe it is
ethical for Everton to give it's user's email addresses to its
"partners" for spamming purposes?

Oh? That's not what you said?

Well, it makes as much sense as the logical leap you made with regard
to Sherry's post.

FYI,

Sherry never said she was reading NGs at work. But I suspect that she
does because SHE WORKS FOR A GENEALOGY PROGRAM COMPANY!

It would be part of her job to check certain NG's, if only to check on
the competition.

Nope, I'm not receiving them but the accounts I use have good spam
filtering anyway, plus I can and do set my own filters.

It's never a good idea to click on an "unsubscribe me" link, esp on
unwanted spam. It just confirms a "live" address.

I always sign up to a service with a throwaway address which I can
dump if the organisation concerned is into selling email addresses.
Unsubscribing is useless because the damage is already done.

Gene,

You're so right - I do work for a genealogy software company. But
actually, it's not really part of my job to check the NGs - I just do
anyway, mostly for my own edification. If I do see a post that I want to
respond to "officially", I'll use my sig line, but otherwise, I just sign
my name. I don't want anyone to think that we're trying to take over the
NG <rbg> I use a "junk" email address for the NG as a spam trapper, not
my work email.

I don't have enough time to worry about the competition (that's the
programmer's jobs <g>) although I do investigate when a gedcom from
another program isn't imported correctly into our program.

I get spam to my work email address because the address is on our
website, user group archives, newsgroups, mailing lists, etc and the bots
are pretty darn good about picking up the email addresses that are out
there.

I don't know if I am the only one that can officially state I have had no
more e-mail from Everton's since requesting to be removed. I can't say as
much for some other sites.
