what does "dem." mean?

Legg inn av paul c » 10 jan 2007 00:25:49

from Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae:

"... was afterwards at Wellington, British Columbia; dem. in 1889 when
his congregation joined the Canadian Presbyterian Church ...". This is
talking about a Church of Scotland minister. If he were a soldier, I
guess "dem." could mean demobilized. Does anybody know what it means
for a minister?

thanks for any tips,
p

"Demitted" - left his post, in this case apparently because there was

no longer a congregation to lead.

Thanks and heh, heh, I can believe that. Seems to fit with his very
fixed opinions about other stuff (back in the days when tobacco was
politically correct).

Cheers,
