I've used FTM for many years, probably since 1994, though I am currently
using version 8.
I attempt to do a good job at recording source information. I'm interested
to know whether I should upgrade to the current version or whether it's time
to consider something else.
I'm interested to see what's out there for I have not worked on genealogy
for a few years but am interested in getting things going again.
Would someone be able to point to a good source for comparing genealogy
software?

I also used FTM for 12 years or so. I currently own the 2005 Edition. I
thought there might be something out there with many more options so I went
to CompUSA and Compared options between various Software Titles. I found
that the best pay software out there turned out to be one of the least
expensive. Family Tree Legends turned out to be the least expensive at $30
and to have the most options.

Google search: genealogy comparison:
http://genealogy.about.com/od/software_ ... /index.htm
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/softw ... index.html
http://www.mumford.ca/reportcard/review.htm (this is the best)
download the master genealogist and give it a try.

You can look at a comparison site but that will only tell you what

The best way to compare is to try as many different programs to see if
you like any of them better. Most, if not all, have either free
versions or free trials.
A lot of people use PAF which is free from http://www.familysearch.com but I
find it clumpy and awkward to use. I much prefer Legacy, which is
also free, from http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/ Genopro offers a free trial
(http://www.genopro.com/) as does Brother's Keeper (http://www.bkwin.org/)
Googling for "genealogy programs" *with* the quotes will bring up
other options.
