Is there a good family history software that is
set up for people who have had a legal change of name? This becomes very confusing with
all software I've found so far.

In Reunion, I can click on a name and get a box that lets me edit.
However, the change only affects the individual, not descendants
previously entered with the old name.
For me the confusion is in knowing the correct way to represent such a
change genealogically. Certainly if Grandpa Jones decides on a whim to
change his name to Smith, you might easily make the change in your
program and make a note about what happened. However, if he changed it
because he found his Father was actually born a Smith, it might have
different implications.

you should always enter the birth name and use it all the way through
then as a fact enter "Also Known As"
FTM 16 will index one alternative name or spelling variation
for an unknown maiden name I put a - because it looks neater on charts
almost never use Mrs Mary Smith
in my trees she would be Mary - and her husband - Smith
A couple of times I might use Mary Mrs Smith as an alternative to Mary -
for a widow
it is up to you to use the practice which pleases you yourself
the advantage of using maiden / birth names is that they never change
some genealogists in USA use Mary (Maiden Name ) Smith
Happy New Year and good hunting

Kit: The Master Genealogist would handle that, if I understand what
you're asking. Let's say your name is Kit Karson and you get it
legally change to Kit Ekat. You could enter yourself into TMG with the
first name of Kit and last name of Karson and then make an Name Variant
entry for that same person as Kit Ekat. You'd just open up that "tag"
with Ctl-V (IIRC) and enter the name. You can designate which one is
the primary name you want used and the other one is automatically
listed as the variation. If, for some reason, you want to change and
have the other name as the primary, then you just can easily change it
and the old primary becomes the variant and the old variant name
becomes the primary. Both names are in the database, with both names
connected (or associated) with the same data (POB, DOB, POD, DOD, etc.)
without having to make duplicate entries or having duplicate people in
the database.
Go to http://www.whollygenes.com for further info. You can even download a
trial version to see how it works. I'd suggest exporting a GEDCOM from
your present program and importing the GEDCOM into TMG and playing with
that to see if it does what you want.
Hope this helps.
