Need Information on Sid Jackson

Legg inn av jbright00 » 29 des 2006 18:05:36

I am seeking information on Sid Jackson. He was born 4 Apr 1870. He
may have been born in KY since his children were all born in KY, but I
am not sure. He died at age 73 according to the family Bible, so I
have the death date Abt 1943. His wife's name was Julia Ann.

I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone can provide.

Thanks in advance.

In the 1930 Federal Census for Kentucky, Sid and his family are living
in Knox County, township of Trosper, and it indicates that Sid and his
parents were born in Kentucky. The record also indicates that Sid was
first married at age 21, and Julia at age 15. Sid is shown as being 61,
and a coal miner, Julia's age is given as 57. Children living with them
are Claudie, daughter, aged 19, Ardie, daughter, aged 14, and Girdie,
aged 8. There is a Gerald Jackson living in the next household, and
could be the Gerald shown in the 1900 Census as a son of Sidney Jackson.

In the 1920 Federal Census, in Knox County, Trosper township, his name
is given as Sydney, and it's difficult to make out the wife's name.
Ancestry.com has her indexed as Johan. Children living with them are
James J., 23, Gerald R., 2?, Dollie M., 12, Mary M., 11, Clauda B., 8,
and Corda E., 5. Sydney and his sons are all laborers in a coal mine.

In the 1910 Federal Census, the family is in Knox County, Artemus
township. Sydney Jackson, aged 38, his first marriage, married for 18
years, born KY, parents born KY, works as a miner in a coal mine. Julia
Jackson, aged 30, had 8 children, 7 still alive, born KY, parents born
in KY. Children are Lee E., aged 16, James T., aged 14, Gerald R., aged
12, Ada J., aged 9, Sudie B., aged 5, Dollie M., aged 2, and Mary M.,
aged 7/12.

In the 1900 Federal Census, the couple was living in Horse Lick
township, Jackson County, KY. Sid's name is given as Sidney P. Jackson,
and the record indicates that he was born in April of 1868, and is aged
32, born in KY, as were his parents. Julia is shown as being born March
1879, and is 21, having given birth to 4 children, with four still
alive. The couple has been married for 8 years. Children at that time
were Lee E., born Feb 1894, James T., born April 1896, Gerald R., born
May 1898, and Ada J., born in March of 1900. Sidney's occupation is farmer.

The birth information for Claudie Jackson, born 2Feb 1912 in Knox County
gives her mother's name as Julia Cornelus, birth information for Cordia
E. Jackson, born 15 November 1914, gives her mother's name as Julia
Cornelius.

The KY Death Index has a listing for a Sid Jackson, aged 73, who died in
Knox County, KY on 1 Jul 1943 (Volume 33, Certificate No. 16245 - you
can request a copy of this certificate from Kentucky.

The GenWeb site for Jackson County, KY has the following marriage:
Sidney Jackson and Julia Ann Cornelius, November 12, 1892.
There's also a listing for a Marshall Jackson, aged 21, and a Susan J.
Cornelius on January 13, 1900.

So far, I haven't isolated a couple who might be Sid's parents. There
are a few possibilities, but with there being such a variance on Sid's
birth year, it's a guessing game. It's possible that his death
certificate has the names of his parents.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

Correction: The son, Gerald, is apparently General R. Jackson.

In the 1880 Federal Census for Madison County, KY, there is a couple,
Clay and Nancy Jackson, who have several children, two of which are
Sidney, aged 10 and Marshal, aged 4. Sidney's age would be right, given
his birth month of April, but Marshall's birth year would be off if he
was 21 in 1900 (or the marriage record could be referring that he was
over 21). Madison County and Jackson County are neighborring counties.

The citation is:
Year: 1880; Census Place: , Madison, Kentucky; Roll: T9_431; Family
History Film: 1254431; Page: 469.3000; Enumeration District: 75

The details are:

Clay Jackson, 30,
Nancy Jackson, 32
Laura Jackson, 11
Sidney Jackson, 10
Mary Jackson, 8
Ann Jackson, 6
Marshal Jackson, 4
Cash Jackson, 3 months

All are born in KY with the parents of Clay and Nancy born in KY as well.

THANKS SO MUCH!

This really is greatly appreciated. Do you think it is safe to say
that these are likely the parents?

How do you go about requesting a death certificate?

Thanks again.

You're welcome.

Without having proof of Sid's parents, I do think that this couple fits
- hopefully the death certificate will have at least one parent's name
on it. One thing to watch out for when searching is that there's
another Clay and Nancy Jackson in Kentucky at the same time - with just
a few year's difference in age between the two Clay Jackson's. The
second couple are in Clay County. I've not been able to find Clay
Jackson prior to the 1870 census with Nancy and Laura, and wonder if
Clay was a middle name of nickname and that his real first name was
something else. I've also not yet found a marriage record for this Clay
and Nancy (I did find the one for the Clay and Nancy in Clay County, KY)
There IS a marriage in Madison County that I think might be them,
because the groom's name is Cashius, and Clay and Nancy had a son named
Cash, but the bride's name isn't Nancy, it's Mollie Francis VanWinkle,
and while I've seen Nancy as a nickname for Mary, I've not seen it as a
nickname for Mollie. Not all of the counties in Kentucky are included
in the marriage records database at ancestry.com

According to ancestry.com, you can get a copy of the death certificate
from the Kentucky Vital Records department. Also, the Family History
Library has microfilm of Kentucky death certificates, but I'm not sure
right now what the cost is for renting film from them now. I do
remember that it went up, so getting the certificate directly from the
Vital Records people might be your best bet.

Give them the Volume No. and Certificate No., death date and Sid's name
- which is shown as being Sid Jackson.

Also, the Knox County GenWeb site has some death certificates on-line
(Sid's isn't one of them), and they've got General R. Jackson's death
certificate there. He died in 1931 after being shot by a pistol.

There's also an on-line index of some cemeteries in the county, and you
might find some family members listed there.

Thanks again for all of the valuable information. I thought you might
like to know that I was able to confirm the accuracy of Nancy and Clay
as Sid's parents. I actually found a daughter of Sid who is still
living. She is almost 92 years old, but seems to have the mind and
energy of a 65 year old. It was a pleasure getting to meet and talk
with her.

She even had a picture of Sid and Julia Ann together and another
picture of Clay. I am going to try to get copies of the pictures and
more information from her daughter who has done some genealogy research
as well.

One odd thing that I learned is that there were stories passed down
through the years that Sid may have actually been born from an Abrams
family and then taken in by Nancy and Clay. I don't know how true this
is though, and the woman I met with (Cordia) seemed to doubt it as
well. She said the oldest son of Sid, which was Lee Elbert "Ebb" (my
great grandfather), had told her the story but she didn't take it
seriously because she said he used to joke about things quite a bit.
It seems it could be valid though because my mother told me that her
grandfather Ebb made her take him to Jackson county before he died and
he talked to a lot of older people there trying to get them to remember
his family, but she doesn't remember anything that was said in those
visits. However, If it is true, I am not sure why Sid would have been
taken in by another family.

I just thought I would update you on the information I found.

Thanks again.
