I have been using Family Tree Maker 9 for quite awhile and am now
looking to upgrade the software. Their seems to be so many versions of
the program out. For instance version 16 has four different versions:
Standard, Essentials,Deluxe, and collector's edition. Without seeing the
specs side by side it's hard for me to compare. Is there any big
differences between the versions other than the number of free days for
an Ancestry.com subscription? Can it be installed over the present
version that I have or does it require a clean install?

I think that you'll find that the actual programme is the same, what varies
is the number of extra data cds you get with it (at least that was the case
when I bought my current ver 2005). Have a look on their site and see what's
provided wiith each one - I normally just buy the basic pack (with no data
discs), but bought a UK-special last time as the dealer was including a
couple of UK-related discs I wanted.
Every time I've upgraded FTM, I've just installed ove the top of the
previous one, without troubles - although I do make a backup of the family
files into a different folder for safety.

Thanks for the reply. I just got a new computer and have stored the
backups for FTM on a flash drive for safe keeping.

Given the major GEDCOM deficiencies of FTM regarding not exporting OBJE tags
for images and not having separate description and place data fields for
events/facts, this may be the time to consider alternatives. Of course, if
you will never need to transfer your data to another program or to another
person, and are satisfied not to be able to enter both the description and
place for events/facts, then FTM may continue to suit you.
