Being a stickybeak I had a look round to see what I could dig up. Went into google and found possibly another book The All Red Line.. The Annals and Aims of The Pacific Cable Project..
JOHNSON, GEORGE; Editor.
The reason I got it I look at the 1st entry after putting in "the all red line" and up came, amongst others, Wikipedia's entry and the above book was mentioned. so then went to http://www.abebooks.com advanced search and there were a few entries for it. The first 3 entries in google were all on this book.
As I have google advanced search in my favourites I went back there and put in the 2nd top box "with the exact words "kenwick cecil cox"
and up came 2 entries.
Tip: Try removing quotes from your search to get more results.

John, thanks very much for that. I didn't recall hearing of that book,
just now checked and it seems the local library has a copy, so I'll be
down there as soon as they open after Christmas.

It is terrific how the census records get augmented with newspaper
notices, often by volunteers, I gather. Reminds me of some loose ends
in my notes and to try to see if there are any descendents of James
Douglas Christie who left Victoria for Seattle and married Theodora
(Dora), sometime after 1903. Among the sisters' sons there were at
least three who were killed in WWI. Most of the Christie line stopped
except for JD's children and those of his sister Caroline. I do know JD
had two sons and may have worked on ships. (Of course the census and
news records can't always be trusted, eg., Caroline was an habitual liar
about her age on ships' manifests and so forth, she was in fact born in
1873. Can't fault her for that as it seems women of the day were
embarrassed if they hadn't married before their early twenties or even
late teens.)

Then there is Isabel Ramsay Christie who married James A Mcguire of
California at about the same time. He was a lawyer. I believe they
were childless and I've never been able to track down her date and place
of death. Finally Annie Holmes Christie, wife of William. It seems she
may have died while staying with family in Nova Scotia while he was on
telegraph business in Los Angeles. I believe she would have been
pregnant or have just given birth.

I'm guessing that "Of Loue of wordly matter..." has to do with British
patent records of which KC Cox had a few, all to do with various gizmos
to automate the submarine cable, a kind of private internet in its day.
Sometime after Marconi's wireless gave the cable monopolies a big
shock, Cox happened to retire to England where I was told Senor Marconi
gave him work.

best of season to you too,
paul c.

My ISP has been having difficulties with newsgroups so I am getting in on
the tail end of this discussion but thought the following information may be
helpful.

In the 1920 U. S. Census I have found a Isabel R. McGuire 49 b. Abt 1871 CA
who arrived in the U. S. Abt 1905 residing in San Francisco, California with
her husband William Arthur McGuire 50 b. Abt 1870 Ohio and attorney.

I also found her place and date of death as follows:
Last_Name First_Name Middle_Name B_yr B_mo B_dy Mothers_Last_Name
Fathers_Last_Name Sex Bp County_of_Death D_yr D_mo D_dy SS_Number Age idno
MCGUIRE ISABEL 1869 08 07 RAMSEY CHRISTE FEMALE CN
ALAMEDA 1940 11 07 71 0

Any questions let me know.

Mike, many thanks for that. Looks like a pretty certain death date.
Congrats to state of California for showing those records. Husband
William doesn't show up, maybe he didn't die in California.

best,
paul
