He entered the US twice:
8 March 1899 from Antwerp
22 November 1900 from Antwerp
Both times he entered the US, he is listed as an American whose home is
Memphis, Tennessee.
Born 1857, Switzerland
1890 Memphis city directory lists him as a barkeeper located at "r. 18
Main" -- business name "L. Sambucetti."
On both his entries into the US he listed his occupation as "saloon keeper."
1910 federal census lists him as living with five other people, all with
different names and occupations. He is shown as "head" and his occupation
is given as clerk in a hotel. The other five people are listed as
"boarder." The address on the census form is 80 S. Second Street, Memphis,
TN.
Anyone else have information on him, or, find something that I can't??
Thanks.

Belgium phone directory at
http://www.infobel.com/teldir/result.as ... nfobel.be/ does
happen to have only one listing for Barfuss. Probably only happenstance,
since you say the ship was from Antwerp, but his birth was in Switzerland.

Guess you have no idea of his home town in Switzerland?
The entries that we found for Salomon Barfuss don't match exactly with

For what it's worth --
My grandfather, Adolph Schlatter, was from Ganderswil, Switzerland.
He made several trips to the US, the final one being in 1910 when he and my
grandmother, Emma, came from Switzerland.
Recently, we discovered a small handwritten memo book in which he kept a
diary, sporadically, between 1903 and 1910. In this diary, we discovered
that he was married to one Louise Kleiner(t) before he married Emma.
Louise Kleiner(t) entered the US on 22 Nov 1900 and is listed as age 23,
barmaid. My grandfather and Louise appear to have been married around 1903,
operated a bakery in Senatobia, MS, 1903 - 1907/8; they went back to
Switzerland in 1908 and he returned to the US, married to another woman
(Emma, my grandmother) in October 1910.
On the 22 Nov 1900 manifest directly below Louise Kleiner(t)'s name is the
name "Salomon Barfuss" who is listed as an American from Memphis, TN, who is
a "saloonkeeper."
My attention was drawn to the fact the my grandfather's first wife's name is
listed on a manifest directly above that of "Solomon Barfuss" a
"saloonkeeper" -- and she is a "barmaid." Makes me wonder if ol' Solomon
was trekking back and forth between Switzerland and the US, bringing young
Swiss maidens back for marriage to lonely Swiss gentlemen in the States.
The 1890-91 Memphis city directory lists Barfuss as a barkeeper located at
"r. 18 Main" -- business name "L. Sambucetti."
I did a quick Google search for "Sambucetti" and "saloon" and "Memphis" and
I found an entry in the "Southern Business Guide Illustrated - 1879-1880"
for a saloon operated by one Louis Sambucetti at 28 Main St., Memphis.
Louis Sambucetti shows up in the Memphis 1880 Census and shows up in a
cemetery listing from Memphis, b. 1/16/1850, d. 3/27/1939.

Believe that the town name is Ganterschwil, Sankt Gallen (St. Gall),
Switzerland.
And, for what it is worth, there are two listings for Schlatter in

There might be others in nearby towns. Using Multimap at
http://www.multimap.com/ you can locate some of the nearby towns.
Maybe some letters to some of your distant cousins would help you in your
genealogy searches. Since one is a church site, with a cousin as pastor,
you might luck into old church records from your cousins.
Good luck.

Thanks a lot -- I may try that.
I have located a young fellow named Schlatter from Switzerland who is in the
US working in NC. He has put me in touch with his father back in
Switzerland. They are no relation but he lives near St. Gallen and knows
some Schlatter's there -- I sent him what I have and he said he'd ask around
for me.
