I'm looking for Waltz (Walz) from Ukraine (Dnepropetrovsk)
Hello,
I'm looking for WALTZ (WALZ) family. My grandma - MARIA WALTZ (WALZ)
(b. 190x, d. 1974). Before WWII her family lived in Ukraine (near
Dnepropetrovsk city). I don't known names of her mother or father
(Waltz, Walz), sorry
She married Chayukov Kuzma. They had two children- daughter Ludmila (my
mother, 1936-2002) and son Alexander (my uncle, b. 193x).
Maybe someone knows WALTZ (WALZ) family, please help...
Thank you.

Re: I'm looking for Waltz (Walz) from Ukraine (Dnepropetrovs
I take it your grandmother emigrated and died in the US. The only Maria
Kuzma whose dates closely fit yours in the Social Security Death Index
(there are three possibles) is Maria Kuzma born Feb 28 1899, died Jan
1975, last lived in Pittsburgh, PA.
If that is her, it gives you a birth date.

Re: I'm looking for Waltz (Walz) from Ukraine (Dnepropetrovs
Do you have more details about your grandfather? That might help. Did
he emigrate to the US? Did he die in the US? If he came to the US, what
name did he use (i.e. most people would have adopted an anglicized
first name or nickname like Charlie instead of Chayukov back then).
If I have the right Maria, she may have emigrated in November 1947
aboard the Marine Flasher from Bremen into New York, but no husband or
kids on the boat with her as far as I can see. She was headed for 3805
Butler Street in Pittsburgh.

Edas,
You should try to find the death certificate for your grandmother because
that may have the names of her parents. Perhaps contacting the Archives in
Dnepropetrovsk will help. Here's their info:

Yes, Anita is right- now I live in Lithuania. My father (died in 1996)
and he was lithuanian.
MARIA WALTZ (maybe WALZ?) was ukrainian german. My mother (Maria's
daughter) when was alive never talk about her mother or other
ancestors... She said only that her family and parents live in small
village near Dnepropetrovsk city... I can't remember village's name.
Maybe you know Soviets killed more than 10 millions people in Ukraine
in 1930'ies... it was most terrible and shame time in World History- it
was Holodomor.
=======================================================
Edas,
You might use the map site of http://www.multimap.com/ and look up
Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine. Then, if you zoom in on the city, you will
start to see other smaller towns nearby. Maybe one of them will jog your
memory, and you will remember it. Here are a few of those nearby small
towns.
Slarl Kodaky, Novooleksandrivka, Sursko Litovske, Voloske, Ljubymrvka, and
Dybrovo. Some of these may be mispelled, since I could not make the
diacritical marks. But, if you go to the site, maybe you can find the town.
I have a good friend here in Texas, whose name is Walts, but old papers in
his family have it spelled as Waltz. I can't remember where he said his
family came from to the USA.
Good luck.

Thank you Joe for help....
....but problem that Soviets change most geographical names in all
occupied countries. Few centuries until 1920'ies there was ethnical
germans country and all villages, towns and they had german names.
Later Soviets (russians) deported to Siberia, killed, purposely bring
famine and destroy this ethnical country.
My mother when was alive once time said this village name... but I was
small boy and I can't remember exactly now... it was german name...
Same problem are with East Prussia (Koenigsberg, Karaliauchius (lith.))
country. Soviets killed, deported to Siberia about 1 (one) million
germans from this country. All cities, towns and villages names was
changed to sovietics and they have not any links or conjuction with
historical names.

P.S. There can help only old maps from bygone.

Edas,
I understand your frustration with the town name changes. For example,
L'viv can be written L'wow in Polish but it was Lemberg in German.
You need to find a German map from the time period before WWII and then take
Joe's suggestion of looking at the town names around Dnepropetrovsk.
If you use http://www.google.com, select the word Images (located right above the
search field" then you can type something like this: +German +map +Ukraine
and see if anything comes up that will help. I'll look for some and post
here if I find anything.
I hope this helps.
Alida
P.S. A good friend of my father is Lithuanian. His last name is
Jurciukonis.

Edas,
The old name of Dnepropetrovsk was Yekaterinoslav for the "glory of
Yekaterina" (Catherine the Great).
On this site: http://www.ahsgr.org/maps.htm#22, you will find old German
maps that are available to purchase. Items #22 is a map of the German
settlements of Dnjeprpertowsk (or Jekterinoslaw). This will probably be the
most helpful to you in learning the German town names. The map is $6.00 if
you are not a member and it can be sent electronically. Here is the page to
order: http://www.ahsgr.org/store2/index.html. If you have questions, you
can email them at ahsgr@ahsgr.org.
You might also want to join a group that specializes in genealogy in
Ukraine. I am a member of a Galicia group but there are many others

Alida has given you some great advice, Edas. We hope you can follow-up on
it.
If you go to the JewishGenShtetlSeeker site at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp, you can see all of the
possible spellings of Dnepropetovsk. .
Dnepropetrovsk, Yekaterinovslav, Yekaterinoslav, Katerynoslav,
Iekaterinoslav, Ekaterinoslav, Dnjepropetrowsk, Dnipropetrovs'k,
Dniepropetrovsk, Dnetropetrovsk, Dnepropetrowsk
On the ShtetlSeeker site you can also use searches for town names similar to
Neuesdorf or Neusbach, that appear close to Dnepropetrovsk, using its
latitude and longitude 48°27' 34°59'.
Let me know if you need help with the site.
Good luck.

Alida has given you some great advice, Edas. We hope you can follow-up on
it.
If you go to the JewishGenShtetlSeeker site at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp, you can see all of the
possible spellings of Dnepropetovsk. .

Iekaterinoslav, Ekaterinoslav, Dnjepropetrowsk, Dnipropetrovs'k,

On the ShtetlSeeker site you can also use searches for town names similar to
