Ship arrival assistance

My paternal grandfather emigrated from Switzerland. Family legend has it
that he made at least two trips from Switzerland to the US.

I have found Ellis Island records of the October 1910 entry by my paternal
grandparents.

I have a small memo book in which my paternal grandfather kept notes.
According to his handwritten notes in this memo book, he and his wife were
in the US 1904 - 1908 and in Switzerland 1908-1910. HOWEVER -- this wife is
not the wife who was my paternal grandmother -- thus, it appears that he was
married twice.

He and first wife were in the US 1904 - 1908; a child may have been born
late in that period. He and the first wife were in Switzerland and there
are references to her and to an infant daughter in his memo book as late as
July 1910.

Then, he and his second wife -- my paternal grandmother -- arrived in the US
in October 1910.

I have not been able to find records of his entry through Ellis Island
except for his October 1910 entry. I plan today to search Ellis Island
using variations on the spelling of his last name -- does anyone have any
other ideas as to how I can track down his previous entries into the US??

Thanks.
