Newsgroup etiquette for Thanksgiving offer

Legg inn av eXpertGenealogy » 22 nov 2006 20:26:58

I operate the website at http://expertgenealogy.com and was somewhat
surprised to see the previous posting about a Thanksgiving offer. I
thought that this type of posting was not acceptable. To determine the
acceptability of such a message, I have searched the FAQ of various
groups and found the following statements on etiquette. This same
advertisement has been posted on a number of newsgroups and most have
no comments. Can anyone refer me to any other references to etiquette
regarding this situation? If there are no objections to the
Thanksgiving offer posting then I have a number of announcements that I
would like to post.

Generally, advertising or selling of a product or
service is not regarded as acceptable Internet behavior.
The announcement of a new product or a new service is
acceptable when there is no mention of price or an
ordering address. Those who post such messages should
answer those questions by personal, direct e-mail or by
letter. Advertisements or selling services by
professional genealogists is strictly forbidden on this
group. If appropriate, those types of postings should
be announced on soc.genealogy.marketplace
only.

I don't really care to read the ads myself. In most of the other
newsgroups, when someone wants to start a thread about a product or service
they usually start the title of the thread with the word AD in much the same
manner that is used for something off topic to the group which is titled OT.

I usually just ignore or block the ads because I don't want to go through
the hassle of reporting them. If they are really persistant then I guess I
would.

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving!

(snip Acceptable Usage Policy quotations, for brevity -- see the original
post.)

I take it a step farther. I avoid all further business with the spammer,
and make sure my online friends learn of the spammer's disregard for Usenet
etiquette. The exception -- and only one -- is in the "alt.*.forsale"
groups.

Or in different words:

... If the advertiser is so ignorant or disrespectful of the intrinsic
purpose of Usenet newsgroups (other than "alt.*.forsale") being for
two-way discourse, rather than for one-way product promotions, then they
don't deserve any business. What they don't realize, unfortunately, is that
in addition to their advertisement there are potentially thousands of other
advertisements which could be run, the same as theirs, by their competitors.
The net result would be a zoo.

... Further, their ISP's Acceptable Usage Policy (or Terms of Service)
probably prohibits commercial advertising in other than "alt.*.forsale"
groups. The spammer is not only showing their disregard for common Usenet
courtesy; they're violating the ISP agreement they gave their physical or
electronic signature to.

The net result: spammers such as that should eventually see their spam as
a cause of diminishing revenue. They should see it as having the opposite
effect to what they intended by posting the spam.If they had the
intelligence to see it, of course. In the long run, they lose business.

Have no fear. You're taking the high road for ethics. It's understood and
appreciated. You'll get my business and others' as well.

Not mine though because he's spamming as well, albeit in an apparently
innocuous way. His post has also been made to at least one other
genealogy news group and he knows full well that the correct place for
promoting or advertising his site/services is
soc.genealogy.marketplace where he regularly advertises.

The posts he's complaining about have been treated the way they should
be - ignored - but that's not to say no one has reported it as spam
both to that spmmers paradise, googlegroups, and to gmail.

Rather than waste newsgroup space protesting, I simply killfile anyone who
advertises anywhere other than s.g.martketplace.
