Problem with Ancestry.com

Legg inn av Dan Zoll » 21 nov 2006 02:54:23

Rich Ludwig submitted a Family Tree to Ancestry.com which listed me as
dead. I have requested him a number of times to make a correction and so
far it has not happened.
I contacted Ancestry.com concerning their responsibility in the matter.
They claimed no responsibility whatever, which means that anyone can
contribute any fictitious genealogy tree to them and they will publish
it without regard to its veracity.
Here is there statement:

We appreciate your message.
I did a search on your name and came up with a member's tree.
(rbludwig@aol.com) the SS# belong's to a Daniel R. Zoll who died in 2000
and was born 13 April 1929. So, the member has the wrong name with the
SS#. You will have to contact the member about the error in his tree.
If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us
know.

So they acknowledge the error but deny any responsibility even tho they
publish the Family Tree.

Of course they wouldn't accept responsibility for user-submitted trees. Do
you think that ancestry has the time and manpower required to verify all of
the user-submitted info? It's only meant as a starting point for researches
to connect with each other but you must verify it yourself.

There is a family tree that had some info on one of my cousins (wrong first
name) I asked the submitter to correct and it still isn't done and this was
several years ago. On the other hand, another user had listed one of my
great aunts as having died a few years ago and I emailed the person to say
that I see her in church every Sunday so she is very much still alive. That
person correct it within a few days I believe. It just depends on who
you're dealing with.

As long as the Social Security office doesn't think you're dead, I wouldn't
lose sleep over it. Why not attach a post-it or a comment to the tree in
question so that others can see your info until it gets corrected?

Happy Thanksgiving!

How do I add a Post-it?
Dan

1. Go to WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/
2. Put in your name for the search
3. Choose the name from the search results. That should bring you to the
page with the ID number for your name.
4. Scroll down to where you see the choices Index, Pedigree, etc and there
is one called Post-em. Choose it and follow the instructions. (you will have
to log in)
5 Repeat for the other entry.
