Help with someone who died in 1995. Charles Henry Webb.

Hello, hope someone can help. My father abandoned the family in 1958. Still
he has a place in my genealogy, of course. I found in the SSDI that he
passed away in September, 1995. The SSDI gives his last address as Cook
County, Ill. I checked with the Cook COunty Dept. Of Vital Statistics and
they checked for 95 plus and minus one year and didnt find anything. The SSA
has informed me that they cannot give out any information, not even the
person who reported the death. They are sending me SSA-L975. COnsidering
what I have been able to dig up about the family these last 20 years, you
would think it would be easy for someone who has died so recently. But, its
not. This mans information is:

Charles Henry Webb
b. 25 August, 1928
d. Septmber, 1995
SSN: 422-28-2713
Last known address was somewhere in Chicago, Cook County, Ill.

What steps would I take to find out where he lived when he died? Any other
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you want a better sense of where he was living, you might want to
check (or have someone in Chicago check) the city directories for around
the year of his death.

There's a bit more info in the social security record worth noting. His
last residence was Chicago; Lincolnwood; North Town and his zip was
60645, which narrows it down a bit. Also he applied for his social
security number in Alabama, which might (or might not) point to his
origins.

If you want to work backwards toward his roots you can request a copy of
his original social security application, which often gives parents'
names.

Hi and thanks. We already have all his ancestry information, what we are
trying to determine is what happened to him after he left Tennessee in 1958.

Hi Jeff,

You might try this webpage:

http://www.chipublib.org/017askalib/ema ... tform.html

You can ask the Chicago librarians to look him up in the older
Chicago phone books and calling the old numbers might locate some
info if the he lived in a roommate situation or if there is a relative
still living with the same phone number still in use. Also if you find
street addresses, then you can sometimes send a postcard to that address
and some postal carriers in some cities will forward the mail onto an
address even after the forwarding request has expired. (This has
happened to me before).

Anyway, good luck to you,

Jonathan

Hi unkleoskar and thanks for taking the time to look but the SSN here is
incorrect, of course this SSN doesnt show up in the SSDI and he might have
used a fake SSDI because he did want to dissapear. He was convicted and
served time for killing someone in a fight about 1962 or 63 in Rhea County,
TN (Manslaughter conviction). The birth date is incorrect as well as mothers
maiden name, his mothers maiden name was Scroggins.

I just briefly skimmed through this thread but since you mentioned the
manslaughter conviction, is it possible he was incarcerated when he died?
I'm not sure how you would go about finding that out but it was a thought
that crossed my mind. Or perhaps he's not really dead and the person he
stole the SS# from died and the records got mixed up?

Wish I had some suggestions for you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I've been looking for your Charles Henry Webb as time permitted (took my
mind off my own genealogy search woes...lol). Anyway, I've come to
probably the same conclusion that you have and that is that there
were/are a LOT of Charles Webbs...and many of them were/are Charles H. Webb.

I searched America's Obituaries and the Chicago Tribune and did not find
any obit or death notice for your Charles H. Webb anywhere for the years
1990-2006. Guess he probably he died somewhere other than the Chicago
area...like a smaller town not covered by America's Obituaries
newspapers. You'd think, though, that if he lived in or around Chicago
there would be an obituary even though he died someplace else.

Can you give us a few more clues about him and his family? I assume
that his date of birth is something you confirmed by other than the
SSDI, right? His SSN was issued in Alabama...was he born or raised in
Alabama? Did he have family there or where? Parents, brothers,
sisters? If he had family that died, perhaps we could find out more
about where he was by finding their obits.

When he took off in 1958, where exactly did he take off from?

For whatever reason, if you don't care to answer the above questions, I
understand and have a couple of suggestions for you.

Assuming Charles Webb last lived and died in Lincolnwood (zip code
60645), I would check with funeral homes in that area to see if they
handled his funeral. I would also check with counties around Cook for a
death certificate....especially north of the city because Lincolnwood is
on the north side of Chicago. Check with the State of Illinois Vital
Records Dept (or whatever it's called) for a death certificate. I'm not
sure if you can get anything from them since it hasn't been 20 years
since Charles Webb's death, but it's worth a shot.

Awhile back I wanted to get a death certificate for an ancestor who died
in 1922...all I wanted it for was to find out the married name of his
mother at that time. I had total info about this kid's death and burial
right down to what hospital he died in and who his last attending doctor
was. I contacted the county where he died and where he's buried. I
gave them his full name and the date of his death....guess what, they
couldn't find anything for that day, that month or that year. Moral of
this story is that county employees don't always search for our
ancestors' records with the diligence that we would like. I'd find
another way to check those Cook County death records if I were you.

Did he have family there or where?

I verified yesterday this information, recieved his military records from
NARA. He was born 8-25-28 in Calhoun, Tennessee. He still has family there,
no one knows where he went after he left. No one has heard a word of him.
Although I was told Sunday that he didnt take off in 58, it was actually
around 63.

He took off from Dayton, Rhea County, Tennessee.

Already did all that and Vital Statistics sent us a letter Saturday saying
after thier search, they found no death certificate. We also checked all of
the funeral homes in the Lincolnwod area and none have any information.

Thanks For Looking. Appreciate it,

Just for giggles, check around in Dayton Ohio. I mean, what
have you got to lose?

For the same general methodology reasons as Dayton Ohio,
check GNIS for a Lincoln Wood somewhere else in the US and
check the terraserver for a wider range of possibilities.

And, never forget that until sometime in the early 1990s,
every new billfold/wallet one purchased in the US came
equipped with a fake Social Security Card and a number of
people USED those fake numbers.

Pete,

You might try the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website to see if there's
someone who could check for an obit in a Chicago paper. If fact, the Chicago
Tribune or another paper may have an online search you could do yourself.
(Though I don't know if it would go back that far).

Folks, correct me if I'm wrong-- Isn't the address in the SSDI the place where
Death Benefits were sent? Not necessarily where the decedant lived, but
indicating a relative's home?

Since posting this I have had several conversations with the SSA. They noted
they were not allowed to give out personal information or information on the
person who reported the death. They did note however that SOMEONE had to
report the death in order for it to be entered into the SSDI. The lady I
spoke with last said there was a form I could fill out and send to the SSA
requesting the information and they would send it to me. They were supposed
to send it to me in the mail, that was a month ago, it never arrived. Does
anyone here know which form that might be? Im thinking I might be able to
find it on the web if I knew the form number. Thank. J

spoke with last said there was a form I could fill out and send to the SSA
requesting the information and they would send it to me. They were supposed
to send it to me in the mail, that was a month ago, it never arrived. Does
anyone here know which form that might be? Im thinking I might be able to
find it on the web if I knew the form number. Thank. J

Hi,

I searched SSA website a little bit and not sure if I found
anything usefull. The first link is the super long SSA website
and the second link is the shortened link of the same site.

I searched for keywords like child and parent and found this
webpage.

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa ... _topview=1

I also found this webpage that talks about a Form SSA-711

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa ... JlbGF0aXZl

http://tinyurl.com/ylo5dk

Lastly, I found this website that applies to children benefits that you
might be able to get.

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa ... _topview=1

I hope either of these websites help you out.

good luck,

Jonathan

Hello, hope someone can help. My father abandoned the family in 1958.
Still he has a place in my genealogy, of course. I found in the SSDI that
he passed away in September, 1995. The SSDI gives his last address as Cook
County, Ill. I checked with the Cook COunty Dept. Of Vital Statistics and
they checked for 95 plus and minus one year and didnt find anything. The
SSA has informed me that they cannot give out any information, not even
the person who reported the death. They are sending me SSA-L975.
COnsidering what I have been able to dig up about the family these last 20
years, you would think it would be easy for someone who has died so
recently. But, its not. This mans information is:

Charles Henry Webb
b. 25 August, 1928
d. Septmber, 1995
SSN: 422-28-2713
Last known address was somewhere in Chicago, Cook County, Ill.

What steps would I take to find out where he lived when he died? Any other
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Are the Chicago deaths included in Cook Co's? Many large
cities have separate registers which never get intermingled.

However, it is entirely possible that even if you pry the
info out of SSA it wouldn't be helpful. A variety of people
report deaths to the state's authority; the state then sends
them, en masse, once a month, to SSA. Officially, the
SSDI's source is the state; you already know he died in
Illinois. Wouldn't an obit be more useful?

You're not alone. My father died in DuPage County, but we certainly had to
give the undertaker a lot of information for obits in the Tribune and
Sun-Times. Can't find anything in the annals of either paper. Matter of
fact, we brought him to New Orleans to be buried with his parents, and
did the same act with the undertaker there for the Times-Picayune, and
there's no obit there either. I specifically remember the latter, because
that's where I got the (possibly incorrect) spelling of my father's
mother's maiden name, from his brother who was the family historian.
