Sloan Genealogy

I am trying to run down information on my maternal grandmother's family
tree. Jessica (Jesse) Sloan, was born on January 15, 1881 married Ralph J
Sawyer. Her Father was Elijah Sloan, a Quaker. Born 1841. Died and buried in
1922 in Bethel Maine, Her Mother Mary A Slingsby born in England, died and
buried in 1920 in Bethel Maine. She was first married in on Apr 28, 1861 at
Hartford Ct to Capt Henry G Smith, Co C 20th Ct Volunteer Regt.
Commissioned 9/8/1862. Killed in action Stanford Court House 1/28/1863. I do
not know when she married Elijah.

Elijah was a Quaker and his message to love the neighbor was passed on
to me by my mother.

I believe Jessica had three to five siblings. My best guess is four. I
believe she was the youngest in the family. Mary would have been forty when
she was born. She was raised in Salem. My brother remembers visiting Salem
with the family and having a house pointed out to us where she grew up. We
are told that she grew up in Salem society. However, once the family money
was gone she wasn't good enough for the Salem men.

Family lore says the wealth came from Elijah 'inventing' the
Transatlantic Cable. But the credit and much of the wealth that should have
come from the invention was stolen from him by the "Major" for which he
worked. My search of the internet doesn't come up with anything to
substantiate this. It would seem he would have probably been too young to
have been involved in the first cable attempt in 1858. I can find no connect
where he and Cyrus W Field may have crossed paths.

She had some brothers. The only name I remember is Bert. I do not know
what it stood for, Albert or Bertram. I believe Bert had a son Jason who
lived most of his life in Laconia New Hampshire. To the best of my
knowledge, Jason worked for the city of Laconia. He had a fiftieth wedding
anniversary party for Jessica and Ralph in the late fifties. He and his wife
Phyllis had no children. I do find him in the Social Security Death index.
He died on May 25 1996.

Family lore also says that one or more of Elijah's sons wasted away the
fortune and left him penniless. My grandfather Ralph took care of him and
Mary the last few years of their lives in Bethel Maine. I have been to their
gravesite in Bethel. Ralph, Jesse, and both my parents Wendell and Bettina
(Betty) Poley are also buried in the family plot.

As a child I remember having a house in Marshfield Mass being pointed
our as a place where my grandmother lived.

I would be very grateful for any assistance anyone may be able to
provide. Especially any census information.

Thanks

Pete (p.poley@comcast.net)
