Looking For Hilda Creasy

Legg inn av Graham » 10 nov 2006 12:15:19

I am trying to find Hilda M. Creasy (nee Custance) born in Luton,
Bedfordshire, England in 1910. She emigrated with her daughter Rita in the
1970s and lived in the Rochester, New York area. I am presuming she is no
longer alive but would like to confirm this. I think she was still alive up
until the late 1990's. Her late husband was Harry Creasy although I am
unsure as to whether he was alive when they emigrated.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Regards...Graham

The Social Security Death Index shows a Hilda M. Creasy, born 27 July
1910, dying in New York on 20 November 2004. Her Social Security card
was issued in New York in 1984, so this looks as if it's the person
you're look for.

I was hoping to find her obituary on ancestry.com, since 2004 is one of
the years that's usually covered, but it doesn't seem to be there. That
doesn't mean that there wasn't one, just that ancestry.com doesn't have it.

RootWeb has the SSDI as well, so you can look up Hilda for free.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

You might find a reference to her death at http://www.familysearch.org

Unfortunately, the SSDI doesn't give a more specific death location than
New York, although on RootsWeb (use the spelling Creasey) it indicates
that her death certificate was presented as proof of her death, and a
lot of states will have the place of burial on the death certificate.

There is a way to order the report from the SSDI, but I don't know if
you can do it from overseas. Same thing with trying to order a copy of
her death certifcate from the state of New York. A lot of states will
only provide copies to descendents, and then for a fee that varies from
state to state. In some states, it can be cheaper to get a copy of a
death certificate on the county or city level, but with not knowing
where Hilda died, there's no way to try that route right now. Even
then, some counties will follow the state rules on who can obtain a copy
as well as the prices for them.

Cathy & Graham: I see no reference either in Rootsweb or Ancestry as
to where she died--only a code (72) which is worth nothing and is to
be ignored. It wouldn't list where she died anyway, only where the
last benefit was mailed. The card was issued in New York, but that is
no proof that she died there. And as you mentioned, she does not
appear in obits online or in News Archive. I have a vague
recollection someone once telling me a (72)was an overseas death.
However, that is only a guess. SS says it has no meaning.
Have you checked Canadian deaths? 1837online or whatever it is called

Good catch. I misread the box for where issued for place of death.
Another guide to the SSDI mentioned that that code (72) and a few other
codes are for internal SSA use only, and have no meaning for a genealogist.

I did a more extensive search for Hilda, and she apparently did not die
in England (they have a database that covers 2004). I've never ordered
a record of someone's SSDI entry, so I don't know what's covered on it.

Hi,

I think Hilda Creasey's daughter Rita married FACKELMAN in 1953 (JUN). I
also think he was a U.S. serviceman based in England.

Graham,

I found Hilda's obituary and have sent the text to you. For others who
were looking, I found it through the Monroe County, NY library system
database, which led me to a Rochester, NY newspaper (the Democrat
Chroncile) who luckily happens to have their 2004 obituaries online.
