Family Lost in America
Hi,
I hope someone can help me find a lost American branch of my family tree.
My Grandfather's brother, Pasquale Antonio Picozzi (from one certificate I
see he sometimes called himself Antonio Pasquale Picozzi) was born in 1887,
son of Michele and Luigia Picozzi in Santa Maria Oliveto at Pozzilli, half
way between Naples and Rome. He emigrated to America around 1900 - 1910.
He had a wife, Concetta but I'm unsure of when or where they were married.
From the Ellis Island site I think that I have found him sailing to the
States in Sept 1907, his age is about right, he came from the right region
in Italy, Pozzilli is the town and he had a sister Angelarosa as stated on
the ship's manifest. If this is him then he either married in America or
returned to Italy and then went back to America.
In the 1910 census he is living in Philadelphia (unable to make out the
street name).
The next record I can find for him is his WW1 Draft Registration Card
(Antonio Pasquale this time), the card was difficult to make out but he was
still in Philadelphia, married with 3 children.
I next find him in his WW2 Draft Registration Card (back to Pasquale
Antonio). He is aged 54, living in S Warnock St, Philadelphia and working
for a company called Silvertex. His birth town was Santa Maria Oliveto.
His wife is called Marie Concetta.
And then I have no further record of him or his family. I can't find them on
the 1920 or 1930 census. I can't find his marriage records or the births of
his children and I can't find any records of deaths!!
I have been told that he had more than three children; the names of some
were Joseph, Anna and Loretta, although that may not be their full names.
My Aunt recalls that Joseph was in the US Forces during the war and may have
been based in England since he visited family in Scotland in the1940's and
was in uniform - I don't know if it was Army, Navy or Airforce, only that
it was American.
One of the children (Anna possibly) married a man called Biles and had a
family of their own. I think that they lived in Philadelphia. They also
visited family in Scotland around about 1955- 1960.
I would be delighted if anyone could get me back in touch with this American
branch or help me find some records of their lives.
Regards,
Vince Picozzi

Are you positive of the date of birth. There are two Antonio Picozzi
listings in the Social Security Death Register, but the dates don't match.
And I understand that both first and last names may be frequently found.
Here they are, and one is in Pensylvania.:
Name Birth Death Last Residence Last Benefit SSN Issued
ANTONIO PICOZZI 21 Nov 1880 Aug 1964 (Rhode Island) (none specified)
038-09-9298 Rhode Island
ANTONIO PICOZZI 07 Sep 1893 Jan 1964 15224 (Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA)
(none specified) 204-10-5965 Pennsylvania
SS site is at http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
There is also a Pasquale Picozzi 104 Level Rd Collegeville Pennsylvania

Not a lot of help, but good luck on your search.

You can't even trust headstones! My great grandmother, for example, was
alive until 1965, and it wasn't until I waded into genealogy that I
discovered her 9 children were wrong about when she was born AND the
names of her supposed parents. Her headstone is wrong by 2 years and
the parents everyone told me were her's turned out to be a work of
fiction. I think she did some major league fibbing to her kids to hide
her illegitimacy. Given that she emigrated and must have needed some
paperwork in 1908 when she came, I can only assume she must have
destroyed or altered her papers to escape detection. Same goes for the
man she married, my great grandfather. Very hard to trace him, and
turns out he was illegitimate as well, raised by a stepfather under a
different surname, retook his birth name as an adult , and was a
bigamist (dumped first wife without benefit of divorce, married my
great grandmother, and emigrated post haste to escape detection). When
I found that out, one of my great aunts didn't speak to me for six
months.
No wonder its never straight forward to find ancestors.
