I have a 2x Greatgrandfather George Washington Payson who served in the
Civil War. I have copies of his paystubs and pension. Im wondering if the
Union army photographed all of their soldiers like they do now? And where
would these images be?

His brother Lewis Payson also served and was a POW at Libby Prison. Anybody
have suggestions on maybe some kind of records on this?

As far as I know the Army did not take photos of the soldiers the way they
do now. But according to a program I saw on History channel or one of those
shows photography was an active business during the war. Photographers would
set up business at a camp and the soldiers would pay to have their photo
taken of which they would then send back home to loved ones. If your
gg-grandfather did have his taken the place to look is in a family photo
album somewhere from another of his descendants. I found a photo of my
gg-grandfather in a box of my g-grandmothers old photos. He is standing
erect with his rifle on his right and a pistol tucked into his belt.

The Army installation at Carlisle PA keeps SUBMITTED photos
of CW soldiers, both sides. If you have a photo, they'll
make themselves a copy of it. BUT you need proof that the
soldier is who you say and that he served on the side you say.

I've been trying to remember the actual name of the place
.... Nothing sounds right to me but if someone else has a
better memory, or time to GOOGLE various options, it might
pay off?

Sorry.
