Search advice needed
I am trying to locate information on my great grandfather, Edward
DeRusha. He was born in Feb. 1858 in either Vermont or Worcester MA.
Census records indicate Vermont, but his death certificate shows
Worcester. His profession was a machinist, so I am inclined to
believe that Worcester MA was the place he grew up in and learned his
trade.
He moved to Chicago in the 1890's and died in 1929. I believe I have
all the Illinois census and Chicago city directory information.
Census records show that the Derusha’s in Vermont were from Orleans
county, and the towns of Salem, Morgan, and Derby. Edward was not
found on this census. Are there any records that I might use to
track him down in this area?
Also are there any on line records that I can use to search for him in
Worcester MA during the 1870's and 1880's?
Any help would be appreciated.

John,
What does the death certificate say for names of his parents? Who was the
informant that gave the info for the place of birth? It is entirely
possible that the informant was mistaken about the place of birth. Do you
know if he had any siblings?
I'd be happy to look into this further for you.

John...I am finding a Edward DeRusha living with is daughter Lillian
in Chicago 1920. However, in previous census with his daughter
Lillian he is enumerated as Joseph E. DeRusha. Was Edward
his middle name and Joseph his first. I find Joseph E. DeRusha
in the 1880, 1900 and 1920 census. Was Edwards (Joseph)
wifes name Mary E.? Did he have a daughter Lillian born
April 1891?

John:
I have a bit of time so I will wander down to the state archives here in
Vermont and see if there is anything on Mr Edward DeRusha. Orleans County
is up on the Canadian border and is part of Vermont known as the Northeast
Kingdom. It is not inconceivable he was actiually born in Canada, in the
Province of Quebec. I will check the Vermont connection.

Search advice needed: DeRUSHA, Edward
I arrived at the archives 15 minutes before closing. Oops. A quick check of
the records did not find a Edward DeRusha in the time frame indicated but I
did find some items:
Samual DeRushia (with the i) was born in Salem on July 8, 1858. His mother
was Bridget (last name unreadable) who was from Ireland and his father was
Louis DeRushia, a farmer.
There is also a Oliver DeRushia married to Harriet Johndrew (sp?) in Derby
on February 7, 1842.
As a point of interest, the town of Salem did not work out for a variety of
reasons. It was finally dissolved and split between what is today Newport
City and the town of Derby.
There was only a handful of DeRusha/DeRushia in the archives in the mid
1800s. If you like I can get the info that is available as time permits. You
may want to check with someone in Standstead, Quebec on the off chance your
Edward was born across the border.

The records I have show he "possibly" had 2 wives. Sahah was listed
on his death certificate. Son John was informant.
Second possibility for wife's name is Lillian. This because on his
daughters (also named Lillian) 1930 census entry her mother is given
as Lillian. Mother was born in Irish Free State, arrived in US in
1865 (per 1930 census)

Edward had one other child, Lillian, my grandmother.
I do not know anything about siblings. Edward was a machinist.
There is 1 other DeRusha, Thomas, that shows up on Chicago city
directories around that time. Thomas was also a machinist. And I
looked for a link between them; death cert and marriage license, but
found no connection.
Family lore has it that Edward's father was French/Canadian and had an
Indian wife, the mother of Edward. His daughter Lillian had some
Indian features. So who knows?

I have no information on any middle name. None is shown on his death
cert. or any other records I have.
His wifes name(s) were Sarah and possibly Lillian. His daughter
Lillian was born in Jan.,1881
Joseph and Mary were likely another family.
