Does anyone know how families were notified of the death of a family
member? Were records kept of this notification?

My family's CSA death was reported by the commanding officer
in a letter to the boy's mother.

I've seen another ver similar letter written by a USA
soldier to a fallen CSA's family, assuring them of a
Christian burial, and detailing _exactly_ where the grave
was located in case they wished to bring him home.

Both those were in the hands of descendants.

Using the CSRs as an access route to the unit's official
history (again, CSA), I've found mention of various deaths,
but no copies of correspondence.

Searching the CSRs for USA soldiers, I haven't found similar
notes; whether that's because they aren't IN the CSRs but
are somewhere else, or because they don't exist, or because
the units of my interest were sloppy record makers, I don't
know.

I had some ancestors who lived in New Orleans when the Union blockaded,
then took over the city. I might not be looking in the right place,
but I get the impression that recording deaths was a low priority,
if done at all.
