Hello.
It has been suggested that i try this group as many helpful Americans are
here......

I am researching a Levi Blocksidge.....he appears on the 1880 US census. It
des say he was born in England, of English parents.
Most of my family are from the Dawley and Madeley areas of Shropshire. So Im
guessing he might also be.

He according to the above census have been born in abt 1832, but I cant find
any trace of him.

Does anyone have an info on tracing if indeeed he was froom England, and
maybe how and when he traveled to the US.

I'm not having much luck with finding Levi in the English census
records, but he is in more than one U.S. Census

Year: 1870; Census Place: Warren, Warren, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1461;
Page: 65
Levi Blocksidge, 40, Farmer, born England
Ellen, 35, born Maryland
Ellen, 18, born Maryland
Isabella, 15, born Maryland
Emily, 5, born Pennsylvania
Charles, 8, born Pennsylvania
Rufus, 2, born Pennsylvania

Year: 1880; Census Place: Ashley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania; Roll: T9_1151;
Family History Film: 1255151; Page: 697.3000; Enumeration District: 161
Blocksidge, Levi, 48, machinist, born Eng, parents born Eng
Ellen, 49, wife, born Maryland, father born Ireland, mother born
Pennsylvania, keeping house
Martha, daughter, 20, born Maryland, dressmaker
Charles, son, 18, born Pennsylvania, engineer
Emma, daughter, 13, born Pennsylvania
Rufus, son, 10, born Pennsylvania

There's another Blockridge family a few households away:
Year: 1880; Census Place: Ashley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania; Roll: T9_1151;
Family History Film: 1255151; Page: 697.3000; Enumeration District: 161;
Blocksidge, Enoch, 46, born England, parents born Eng, carpenter
Sarah, 50, wife, born New York, parents born New York, keeping house
Ellen, adopted daughter, 14, born Pennsylvania, father born NY, mother
born Pennsylvania

I tried to find Enoch Blocksidge in the English census records, but
haven't found him yet, either.

By the 1910 U.S. Census, Ellen Blocksidge is a widow, and living in
Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania with her son Rufus and his
wife and children.

I did find a listing for a Rufus Blocksidge in a city directory for
Pittsburg, covering the years 1888-1892, so I tried to find a Rufus in
that county in 1900, since the family should have been there. I did
find a Locksidge family, and even though some of the names are off, I
believe it's them, and it gives another name for Levi:

Locksidge, Abraham, 69, Apr 1831, married for 42 years, born England,
parents born England, immigrated 1837, lived in U.S. for 63 years, no
occupation
Annie, wife, 54, July 1845, had 8 children, 4 still alive, born
Maryland, parents born Pennsylvania
Rufus, son, 28, 1872 (can't make out month), born Pennsylvania, Day Laborer
Emma, daughter, 24, Oct 1875, born Pennsylvania

However, I can't find Abraham Blocksidge either. If it's correct that
he immigrated in 1837, then there won't be any record of him in the 1841
English census. I've found Enoch in the 1900 U.S. Census, but it's
showing him born in Pennsylvania and not England, born Jan 1834.

Sorry that I couldn't have found anything that would be more useful for
you. Maybe one of the other researchers here will have better searching
skills.

I've been trying to find Levi in the 1860 census but he's not showing up.
Probably because he was in the Civil War. If the oldest children in the
1870 census were born in Maryland then it stands to reason the family was in
Maryland in 1860 but I didn't find them yet.

If I find anything else, I'll post it.

Hello, thanks for all your really useful information.....will take a while

Just one thing....would Levi have had to be a US citizen to sign up to the
army??

How long did he serve in the Civil War??

Looking at the image, I'll bet that the enumerator had originally
written Levi a. and then whoever transcribed his notes ran the name
together. How they came up with Bloachsige is beyond me, though <grin>
(although the actual image looks to be Bloachsage).

I did find another family in Pennsylvania with a similar name, and the
head of household is from England:
Year: 1860; Census Place: Danville, Montour, Pennsylvania; Roll:
M653_1146; Page: 39;
Ann Blocksig, 45, born England
Edwin, 18, born Pennsylvania, day laborer
Sylvester, 14, born Pennsylvania
(note: Sylvester was in the Civil War, joining the Union on June 20, 1863)

In 1860, relationships between the head of household and the rest of the
household aren't given, so Edwin and Sylvester could be brothers or
cousins of Ann, or they could be her sons. Going with the birth year of
1832 for Levi, she'd be old enough to be his mother. That birth year,
and the age given for him in 1860 aren't the same, though. He would
have been 27 in 1860. But, ages in census records are very fluid.

Anyone could enlist, US Citizen or not. In fact, a lot of
immigrants enlisted to cut their wait-time for citizenship.

It says he enlisted on 1 July and was mustered out on 2
August, so he served 30 days, minimum. The official record
of his service would tell you more -- maybe.

I'm not having much luck with finding Levi in the English census records,
but he is in more than one U.S. Census

Year: 1870; Census Place: Warren, Warren, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1461;
Page: 65
Levi Blocksidge, 40, Farmer, born England
Ellen, 35, born Maryland
Ellen, 18, born Maryland
Isabella, 15, born Maryland
Emily, 5, born Pennsylvania
Charles, 8, born Pennsylvania
Rufus, 2, born Pennsylvania

Year: 1880; Census Place: Ashley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania; Roll: T9_1151;
Family History Film: 1255151; Page: 697.3000; Enumeration District: 161
Blocksidge, Levi, 48, machinist, born Eng, parents born Eng
Ellen, 49, wife, born Maryland, father born Ireland, mother born
Pennsylvania, keeping house
Martha, daughter, 20, born Maryland, dressmaker
Charles, son, 18, born Pennsylvania, engineer
Emma, daughter, 13, born Pennsylvania
Rufus, son, 10, born Pennsylvania

There's another Blockridge family a few households away:
Year: 1880; Census Place: Ashley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania; Roll: T9_1151;
Family History Film: 1255151; Page: 697.3000; Enumeration District: 161;
Blocksidge, Enoch, 46, born England, parents born Eng, carpenter
Sarah, 50, wife, born New York, parents born New York, keeping house
Ellen, adopted daughter, 14, born Pennsylvania, father born NY, mother
born Pennsylvania

I tried to find Enoch Blocksidge in the English census records, but
haven't found him yet, either.

By the 1910 U.S. Census, Ellen Blocksidge is a widow, and living in
Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania with her son Rufus and his wife
and children.

I did find a listing for a Rufus Blocksidge in a city directory for
Pittsburg, covering the years 1888-1892, so I tried to find a Rufus in
that county in 1900, since the family should have been there. I did find
a Locksidge family, and even though some of the names are off, I believe
it's them, and it gives another name for Levi:

Locksidge, Abraham, 69, Apr 1831, married for 42 years, born England,
parents born England, immigrated 1837, lived in U.S. for 63 years, no
occupation
Annie, wife, 54, July 1845, had 8 children, 4 still alive, born Maryland,
parents born Pennsylvania
Rufus, son, 28, 1872 (can't make out month), born Pennsylvania, Day
Laborer
Emma, daughter, 24, Oct 1875, born Pennsylvania

However, I can't find Abraham Blocksidge either. If it's correct that he
immigrated in 1837, then there won't be any record of him in the 1841
English census. I've found Enoch in the 1900 U.S. Census, but it's
showing him born in Pennsylvania and not England, born Jan 1834.

Sorry that I couldn't have found anything that would be more useful for
you. Maybe one of the other researchers here will have better searching
skills.

I am researching a Levi Blocksidge.....he appears on the 1880 US census.
It des say he was born in England, of English parents.
Most of my family are from the Dawley and Madeley areas of Shropshire.
So Im guessing he might also be.

He according to the above census have been born in abt 1832, but I cant
find any trace of him.

Does anyone have an info on tracing if indeeed he was froom England, and
maybe how and when he traveled to the US.

Hello, thanks for all your really useful information.....will take a
while to digest it all!!!

Just one thing....would Levi have had to be a US citizen to sign up
to the army??

At that time, no. Anyone could enlist, citizen or not and enlisting was
sort of a "fast track" to gaining citizenship.

How long did he serve in the Civil War??

According to the enlistment and muster out data provided below, about a
month.

I've been trying to find Levi in the 1860 census but he's not
showing up. Probably because he was in the Civil War. If the oldest
children in the 1870 census were born in Maryland then it stands to
reason the family was in Maryland in 1860 but I didn't find them yet.

If I find anything else, I'll post it.

Looking at the image, I'll bet that the enumerator had originally
written Levi a. and then whoever transcribed his notes ran the name
together. How they came up with Bloachsige is beyond me, though

Anything is possible where the Census is concerned. You're a census taker,
a first generation Irishman, not highly educated but literate enough to read
and write passably. You go to the home of a German family who aren't home.
You go to the next house or apartment, a French immigrant family only
arrived last month. You get their information. Acting as instructed, you
ask the French family about the German family's information.

Lot's of room for all sorts of errors.

With names like Levi and Enoch, it rather suggests that they were
brothers, nowithstanding Enoch's changing place of birth. (Shades of
Dear Cousin Albert ;)) ) 1834 and 1837 would add some weight to that
at well.

Wee Peem's biggest problem is going to be pinning down where in
England the family came from. He's found that Shropshire has the most
occurrences, so that's probably a good place to start. Subbing to the
Rootsweb Shropshire list would probably with worthwhile.
