Irish and the Civil War

Hello -

I've got a great-great-grandfather who emigrated to the US in 1859, ends up
following the Union Army the entire war employed as a blacksmith in a
civilian position - with the entire family in tow. Imagine that scenario.

Does anybody have references about the the immigrants during this time
period, specifically civilians and their role as volunteer workers during
the war? I know only he worked for the Union military railroad. Thanks.
