Am looking for any information on Orson Hyde Rollins who was killed in
the Castle Gate, Utah Coal mine explosion in 1924.
TIA,

I forget where to find it, but there is a website now online where you
can look at the Salt Lake newspapers.

At the time of the recent disasters in West Virginia, local TV reports
told of some very serious disasters, including this one, and this is
one of the worst in US history.

The Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune, as well as several
now-defunct dailies likely had alot of coverage of this.

Another idea is to try your search in the Google News archive, use the
advanced search function to find this. They even have some papers back
to the 1700s, but presently it is spotty, so the Salt Lake searches
might be the one to look for.

Miners in those days were not typically Mormons, which explains why
Mormons didn't settle the towns around mines, such as Park City,
Brigham Young told members not to go to work in these towns. So it is
not likely, although it might be worth a shot anyway, to look up the
ancestor on familysearch.org, if he was Mormon there might be an early
record on the IGI.

The site for the Utah Digital Newspaper Project is
http://www.lib.utah.edu/digital/unews/. It includes digital access
(keyword searchable) to over 40 newspapers throughout Utah beginning
with 1850 (Deseret News) and running up into the 1960's (Vernal
Express).

This includes the "News Advocate" of Carbon County for 1915-1932
(http://www.lib.utah.edu/digital/unews/na.html).

You might also try the Helper City Library
(http://www.helpercity.net/Library.html) (Helper is near where Castle
Gate once was). Helper is also home to the Western Mining & Railroad
Museum, which might have some information in their archives
(http://www.wmrrm.org/).

Hope this is helpful,

Steve
