Nash Family White Co TN or Boyd Family White Co TN

Legg inn av sunshineboyd@gmail.com » 26 sep 2006 13:46:20

Hi folks,
I'm new to both newsgroups and genealogy so please bear with me if I'm
putting something in the wrong format. I'm working on the above
families and am having some problems locating info on some people.
Henry Virgil Nash's wife - can't find out anything about her except
that I think she's a Carr and went by the name Cannie. Henry Virgil
Boyd's wife was a Sliger, the best I can tell, although in some of the
research I've done, it says Kate Carr was HIS wife, but family members
say that's incorrect.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hey there,

Welcome to the addiction that is known as genealogy! <grin>

It would help if you added some dates with those names, and maybe even
children, siblings, if you know them. Many of us here have access to a
ton of resources, and having dates (either birth, marriage, death,
general, etc.) can help tremendously when trying to do a search for
someone, because you never know when a name that you think is unique
will end having 30+ different hits when you do a search.

And speaking of searches, there are things that you can do for free.
There's the GenWeb, which are websites that are area specific. Some
GenWeb sites can have an enormous amount of information online - birth,
marriage and death records, census records, obits, etc. The GenWeb site
for White County, TN is:
http://www.tngenweb.org/white/

You can also post queries through the GenWeb sites, and hopefully find
others who are researching these same people.

Another site that's free is FamilySearch.org, which is run by The Family
History Center (LDS):
http://www.familysearch.org/

Another helpful thing is just doing a general internet search, on google
or another search engine, for the name of a person.

Good luck and have fun solving your puzzles!

Thanks for the help, Cathy!! I've filled in a few gaps, but here's my
'Henry Virgil' problem:

Henry Virgil Boyd b 16 May 1856 Putnam Co TN, married 22 Jun 1898, died
9 Apr 1965
Son John Landon Boyd b 1 Sept 1918 White co TN, d 8 Nov 1969, married
to Louise Nash.

The info I've found so far says he was married to Kate Carr, b 29 Oct
1888. However, family photos and interviews say he was married to a
woman named Sliger, possibly Kate.

Louise nash's father was Henry Virgil Nash, and all I can find on his
spouse is that she was called Cannie, but some family interviews think
THAT was Kate Carr. I don't have any dates on either of them and
haven't been able to find them. I've actually not got very far at all
with the Nash branch, but have done much better on the Boyd side, but
this problem with the spouse is messing with me.

If anyone is looking for info on the Whitaker/Cash families in White
Co, I have a little along those lines; also the Cravens family in the
same county.

Thank you again, Cathy, for the links!

I haven't yet found Henry Boyd in the 1900 Federal Census, but he's in
the 1910 one with his mother Dorcas and wife Katie. And it indicates
that Katie is his second wife. So, it's possible that his first wife
had the last name of Sliger. I'm still trying to find the family to see
if his first wife is with him in 1900.

I'm not having much luck finding Henry Nash and his family. Do you know
the birth year for Louise?

I've found Henry and Dorcas in the 1900 Federal Census, living in White
County. Their name is written as Boyed, instead of Boyd. Henry is
single, and Dorcas is a widow.

Ancestry.com also has Henry's WWI Draft Registration from 1918, and he's
spelled his name as Boyed on that, as well.

Hope that helps,

Cathy, is there somewhere else to go to get the Federal Census. I've
found some online, but most of those have been in the 1880's. Where
did you find the ones from the 1900's?

I've got a subscription to ancestry.com, and they've got the Federal
indexes up to the 1930 one.

They also have additional information, such as Tennessee marriages from
1851 to 1900, and that shows the marriage of Landon P. Boyd to Darcas
Whiteaker, in 1874 in White County. What I haven't found is the name of
Henry Boyd's sibling -- Landon and Dorcus were childless as of the 1880
Federal Census, and the child was deceased by the 1900 one (the 1890
Federal Census was destroyed, and only fragments remain). There's a
1891 State census for Tennessee on the White County GenWeb site (that
county only, but ancestry.com has it for the entire state), and it has a
listing for L. P. Boyd, so he was still alive as of that time. From all
that I've seen on the marriage record and census records, Henry Boyd
would have been born in White County, not Putnam County. Now, Landon
Boyd seems to have been born in Putnam County - he's living there with
his family in the 1860 and 1870 Federal censuses. Dorcus Whitaker was
living in Putnam County in the 1860 Federal census, but in White County
in the 1870 one (again with some creative spelling on the part of the
enumerator. She's Darcas Whiteaker in 1860 and Dorcus Whitacer in 1870)
- and her father, Henry Whitaker, was married twice - first to Edith
Cash(the name on the death information for Dorcus) and then to Catherine
Dyer.

I'd recommend getting the death certificates for John Landon Boyd and
his siblings, if possible, to see who is listed as their mother. If
you're lucky, they'll all have a last name for the woman. And, if
you're in White County, you can check out the marriage records for
1900-1910, which should show both marriages for Henry Virgil Boyd and
the full names of both of his wives.

My wife's maternal family are the Boyd's of Putnam Co. TN. A lady
has written a book on the family; "The Boyd Family History" in 2003..
I looked for you Henry Virgil Boyd and did not find him... Her line starts
with
William Boyd b1761 in NC.. migrated NC > AL > TN before 1800...
The author's name is Carol Littrell Hall Bradford of Cookeville, TN. She
might have info on your Boyd line... Although I am not sure it is still
active,
I will send you her email address off list...

Thank you Don! I think it's the same line (at least I have a William
Boyd from family letters that say he was from Ireland, but all I have
to verify that right now are the letters, and William is pretty popular
with the Boyd's apparently :) ) I would appreciate the address there.
Next month I'll be headed to the area and am hoping to get as much done
as possible in a couple days. Hoping to go to several cemeteries and I
want to get to the courthouse, but I'm not sure I'll break away during
the week, so I'm not sure about that. Thanks again for your help!

Cathy, is there somewhere else to go to get the Federal Census. I've
found some online, but most of those have been in the 1880's. Where
did you find the ones from the 1900's?

thanks,

I've found Henry and Dorcas in the 1900 Federal Census, living in White
County. Their name is written as Boyed, instead of Boyd. Henry is
single, and Dorcas is a widow.

Ancestry.com also has Henry's WWI Draft Registration from 1918, and he's
spelled his name as Boyed on that, as well.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

Thanks Doug - what I've been told so far is that Henry's wife is
'Cannie" but I'm sure that's not a real name. I'm hoping my trip to
some of the cemeteries in the county next month will clarify more, but
I'm going to try this Jello Lee (is that possible?) and see what I can
find.

Hi folks,
I'm new to both newsgroups and genealogy so please bear with me if I'm
putting something in the wrong format.

<grin

Cathy
