FTM: deluxe or collectors edition
I'm comparing the deluxe to the collectors edtion of family tree maker
16. The only difference I see is the collectors edition includes the
Official Guide + 3 Months extra to ancestory.com. Is the Official
Guide worth getting. Its an extra $30 but after rebate the difference
between the 2 programs is $20. I usually don't read manuals so was
wondering if it had good information that may be hard to figure out
from the program.
Thanks,
Craig

Check the difference in price between the basic prog plus an Ancestry sub or
the deluxe.... Then, if you think Ancestry will be useful to you, let that
decide for you.
I've been using FTM for years, have always found the instructions in the
Help file sufficient.

The FTM deluxe version as someone else pointed out does come with data
disks that may of may not hold some information that may be of use to
you depending on the area or country you are researching for most of us
in the southern hemisphere these disks are worthless.
If you do go down the FTM track be prepared for upgrades just about
every year and having to pay the same amount each year this being about
$30.00 USD.
As far as I am aware FTM used to be one of the leaders in Genealogy
software that is no longer the case.
IMHO Legacy is now the Leader and the SE version is free to download
after registering online, the Deluxe version costs about $30.00USD and
is well worth it as far as I am concerned.
Legacy does have upgrades within the version at no extra cost thus your
research dollar or pound goes further.

everyone at once to get a feel of it (even if it does lay them out a bit
weird). I also paid for Ancestory UK access.
Of course now I want to look at the US records because my sister who moved
to the US a few years ago has a daughter so I'm now wanting to trace her
fathers tree, but the extra amount just for one person who I'm not even
related to may be a tad much but we'll see...

Caveat Emptor. FTM is one of the very few products that will not export
media tags to a GEDCOM file. Therefore, if you want to use a program like
The Complete Genealogy Reporter, or a tree diagrammer with picture
abilities, or otherwise transfer your database via a GEDCOM file, FTM is not
as good as Legacy and most other popular programs.

I think it's one of the thing Legacy users seem to like. I've already had

have had for free) at http://legacyfamilytree.com/RevisionHistory6.asp
I looked at this in detail before deciding and saw version 5 went from
November 2003 until May 2006, with an overlap with version 6 (started
August 2005) and the upgrade from one to the other was only $22 but they
did make it so version 5 worked with the updated version 6 data files.
I personally don't mind paying for updates if there have been good
additions to it (they have to earn money for the time spent in development
after all) but Legacy seem to not ignore older users and force them to
update. They seem (to me) to have the balance right.

I was sure that Legacy SE will allow you to print however it will not
allow you to create a PDF file, Legacy deluxe does.
Up grades within version are free, the latest version is 6.0 and when
you download the current version you ought to get build 6.0.0.110
When version 7 comes out anyone wanting to stay with the Deluxe version
will need to pay for the upgrade and this has in the past been about
$20.00USD which is cheaper than any upgrade in FTM.
Also on the subject of Legacy there is a user group as well so if you
get stuck on something that's the place to go.
Legacy keep an eye on most of what is said about the program and if any
issue comes up normally they will look into it and see if they can find
what the problem is or offer a solution.

Christopher and other kind folks,
Thanks for that answer (and to the others for all the rest) and to the OP
for asking the question. I've been wanting to ask the same thing but am
such a newby at this that I had decided to lurk a while longer before
revealing my vast ignorance.
First, I need to use a Legacy or similar package to capture all the work my
mom put onto large sheets of paper for her's and my dad's lines.
Then I am going to be trying to research a McCurdy/MacCarty (eventually
Scottish?) line which is currently completely blank past the 3rd generation
back. Even that is a bit fuzzy in places due in part to some unfortunate
events. I'm also interested in a Snyder/Schneider/Schnitter line which I
know goes back to Switzerland before about 1853.
At the moment I am just sort a flailing around reading all the advice I can
and trying to figure out where to start, especially with the McCurdy line.
I have been pondering ancestry.com as a possibility. I don't mind spending
a bit but just don't want to totally waste it. Any and all advice will be
