Dorm servant?

I'm looking at a possible lead in my genealogy research and a female of
interest in the 1870 census is listed as a "dorm servant"? What is a dorm
servant? (She's listed in the household of a saloon keeper.)

I suspect it's mistranscribed and should be "dom servant" - the usual

abbreviation for "domestic servant". She probably swept the floors, washed
the pots, etc.

I'd say she kept the bedrooms (dormitories = dorms) clean... a bit like

a modern backpackers' hostel.

Or possibly a misreading of dom servant, ie a domestic servant.

That's what I would have said if it had been a UK census - was 'dom

servant' usual in US censuses ?

Perhaps if you were to post up the name and location (and ref) of the
person concerned, someone could have a look and give you a definitive
answer rather than guess.

Could it have actually been dom. servant as in domestic and just
misspelled?
