Re: 1870 census
I couldn't find anything for her in that census. Her immigration popped
up, showing that she arrived in 1867, so it might be that she was
married by that census. Or the enumerator misspelled her name or had
illegible writing or the indexers couldn't decipher the enumerator's
handwriting.
Do you know where she was living in later years, or her married name?

Re: 1870 census
Thanks Cathy. She married in 1871 in Boston and then moved to California. I
have found her there in 1880 and found her immigration. I was hoping to find
her in 1870 as it isn't a very common surname but as you say there is
probably a misspelling involved. If you searched for a Julia born Ireland
about 1852 or 1845 living in the Boston area would there be too many
results?

Re: 1870 census
I've tried searching for an Irish Julia in Suffolk County, using the
years between 1845 and 1852 (give or take a year), and haven't seen any
surnname that looks as if it might be Pomfret, but no luck. I did find
a Pomfret family, and can see how the name could be misread, but even
after that, I couldn't see any surnames that looked as if they might be her.
There's always the possibility that she was missed or that she was
married prior to the marriage that you about, and then widowed, or that
the marriage you know about happened earlier.
Maybe someone else with better searching skills can find her?

Hmmmmm... is Pomfret her maiden name or her married name ?
I found a Morris Pomfret in Massachusets living in a Kimball
household. With a daughter named Julia.
1870 > MASSACHUSETTS
Series: M593 Roll: 611 Page: 13
Says she was born in New Hampshire however.
Also do you have Julia's middle name ? Sometimes people start using
their middle name when they move to a new county.

Re: 1870 census
Thanks Jonathan. What (where) 2 hits did you get for Julia-I get many.
Pomfret was her maiden name. She should be in Massachusetts in 1870.

Hi John,
Sorry for my not being clear. When I was at
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/ and I searched for Julia Pomfret, it shows
a lot of hits, but the two that were interesting for you or someone to
look at were at the England & Wales FreeBMD Marriage Index because some
people got married across the Atlantic before coming over, or sometimes
they moved to the USA and then got married back in England even though
they were from Ireland. I am assuming some relatives or at least a few
witnesses might make the trip from Ireland to England to see the
wedding. But since I don't have ancestry.com at home, I don't think I
can check to see who the spouse was.
Lastly did you try http://www.findagrave.com yet for Julia or other relatives ?
It helped me once or twice.
