The short answer is ... no. Different techniques are used to find them on
the census pages. In what city and what year are you looking?

OK...The latest census available is from 1830. Some local census may have
been taken in 1935. Go to Ancestry or HeritageQuest and start with the 1830
census. Get a map of Bethesda from Yahoo or Google. Look in the 1930, MD,
Montgomery Co. listing for District boundaries. Compare these with your map
to find the districts for the addresses you have given. Look through these
districts, page by page for the address you want. There are usually about
30 to 50 pages per district so it shouldn't take too long. Be aware that
some street name may have changed since then so don't let that throw you.
Good hunting. Bob

Now, the entire region is like one big city, but back a few

where I grew up, all of the house numbers were changed for some reason
in the 1960s. I don't know if it was a result of Norfolk County (VA)
being broken up, or if it was a post office decision, or a city of
Norfolk decision (I don't have my notes from a foray into a Norfolk City
Directory at hand, and I can't remember the year that the changes were
made). But, if it happened in one city/county, it could happen in
another, even one in a different state.
It might just be that the 4 digit house numbers on Battery are on a
different page, but it might be worth keeping in mind that the house
numbers could have changed.

Battery lane is enumerated in fits and starts; it seems to have been a
boundary street, so there are 2 to 4 houses on Battery, preceded by
two houses on X and followed by 4 houses on Y. I've found both ends
of Battery, but nothing in 4800 block (so far, everything has had only
3 digits.) I've found the part of Bethesda which is across Wisconsin
from Baattery.
I've seen only bits and pieces of Wisconsin and nothing higher than
about 3800.
111 Battery is in ED 16-19 SD 2 Sheet 7B
I _know_ there's an on-line ed map site, but I can't find it.

Yes, as it turns out -- Bethesda streets *were* re-nummed ca 1960.
Someone remembers her parents being bumfuzzled by having to remember a

Also, In the general area of what is now 7500 Wisconsin was a race
track, oval and all. It is doubted it reached clear to present-day
Battery Lane, but it could be fence at 7500.
Another query is still out.

Cheryl,
Good hunting job! I wonder too, since the OP said that it seemed as if
the family was vacationing, if the place might have been the old style
motel with separate buildings, and if there was a race track nearby,
then I would think that there'd be motels handy for trainers, bettors,
etc. (the owners would have probably stayed in a hotel). Another idea
that came to mind is a country club, since the OP also said it looked as
if there was a tennis court wall in the background of one picture.

Hi Cathy,
Thanks for the idea. But my grandma in 1941 went to Bethesda and stayed
at 7500 Wisconsin which was a relatives house. I hope Wisconsin and
Battery Streets were not renumbered as that would be harder to find the
old house.
One note I have from my grandma is that either 7500 Wisconsin or the
house on Battery had a clay tennis court and a garden. My gma and gpa
were avid tennis players and I have another old photo of my gpa using a
heavy rolling stone to flatten out the clay tennis court. (^:
