I live more than 3000 miles from a church archive, St. Matthew's Lutheran
in Charleston SC, where a good handful of my ancestors left records. The
records exist there in three formats: original books, photocopies of the
books, and one microfilm reel.
The Charleston County public library has one copy of the microfilm reel
but no other library or archive appears to have a copy. Naturally the
existing two copies of microfilm are not available via interlibrary loan.
The only way to access the records is to use them at the local library or
archives.
The church council is considering my request to allow me to pay for a
duplicate copy of the microfilm and house it at a west-coast library
where I and any other interested parties can access it. But how easy is
it to find places that will duplicate microfilm reels and about how much
will it cost? Does anyone have any idea?
Assuming I can afford it and the church agrees I want to make it as easy
as I can for them by having the legwork done ahead of time, so any
suggestions would be most appreciated.

Re: Microfilm duplication vendors/costs
I did a google on "microfilm" for Charleston and found the following
company.
http://www.pmsimage.com/html/services.html You might give them a call
and check out their duplication service costs. Depending on who held the
microfilm, I saw costs from $15 per reel up to ridiculous pricing.
Good luck...

Do a GOOGLE search using the phrase "microfilm duplication" and "cost"
and you will see a wide range of pricing, anywhere from $45 to $2,500.
Look on the outside of the box of the particular roll of film you are
using or interested in to find out the name of the microfilm
publisher/printer who made that one and then contact them for more
information. You may also want to ask any local library that has such
film--they often have to purchase replacement rolls and may be able to
give you an estimate of what they cost.

I wonder if the Genalogical Society of Utah (LDS Church) might be persuaded
(with St. Matthew's Church's permission, of course) to either microfilm the
original records, or to duplicate the microfilms already in existence, and
then make the records available through the LDS family history centers
throughout the world.

@trnddc03:
Thanks to all who posted suggestions. I'll follow up with this company
while awaiting the church coincil's decision whether to permit duplication
of their film.
The suggestion to contact LDS is a good one as well, though St. Matthew's
archives may have a reason for wanting to control where and how their
archives are duplicated. I guess I'll just have to see what they say.
