Merz Family
Hello everyone. I'm looking for a family with the surname of Merz in the
Detroit/Wayne County, Michigan area. I don't know what the parents names
were, but two of the children's names would be Anna/Annie, and Alexander
Merz. Anna was born about 1959, so if someone could send me the images, if
available, for the 1860 and 1870 Census I would really appreciate it. I
didn't find anything in the 1880 Census.

Re: Merz Family
I can't find them. There's a 15 year old Annie Mery in 1870 Detroit. Her
last name could be Merz. She is a chamber maid and was born in New York.

I guess "Alois" in the 1870 image could be your Alexander.

I was thinking the same. I do know that the age of Anna is right, she was
born Sept 30, 1859 and the 1860 Census was conducted in June 15th, 1860
where her age is reported to be 8/12. So that is right on the money. It
seems that her name is Maryanna, which clears up the mystery of the Marriage
Cert, which reports her name as Mary Ann Merz. Every other piece of
documentation I have for her is Anna Merz, or Anna Mertz, and one Anna
Mortz. Even her headstone is inscribed as Anna. Anna was my great,
great, grandmother who married Anthony Doemer in 1887. This very well may
be the family I've been looking for. In the 1900 Census the Doemer family
(oddly misspelled "Denmore") lists Anthony, Anna, their four sons, Anthony,
Edwin, Raymond, and Elmer, and then a brother-in-law by the name of
Alexander Martz whose birthdate is listed as May of 1862. The 1870 Census
you sent me has Alois listed as 8 years old, which also matches perfectly.
Yep, I think you've found the family I've been looking for. Thanks!
