Hopefully the habit of people using boards there as chatrooms spread

I think "cheesy" is a bit harsh. From what I've seen, the more
experienced members there do a fairly good job of assisting others,
particularly those who are trying to find out about their immediate

I'm not blind to the site's numerous deficiencies, but the place is not
entirely without merit!

Re: gr fiasco
Hello,
I'm not sure what I'm doing, so please bear with me.
I also came from GR. They didn't get rid of me, but things aren't good.
It was the first and only "chat" site I've been on, so not sure how
they work.
I got so much help there and really miss the contact. I hope we can do
much the same here. I have Ancestry UK, if anyone needs something. I'm
also in Australia.

Re: gr fiasco
Keep in mind alt.genealogy is not a "chat" site. It is a newsgroup,
think more of a message board. Here many genealogical related questions
are presented and many get answered. The Some Kind Souls (SKSs) here
almost always reply with a good answer or maybe detail a new direction
to try (if you had not already tried that particular route). It is best
to try to give as much information as possible. Such as names,
countries, DOBs, DODs, etc... . They do not actually do the work for
you, but can provide great assistance in getting those road blocks moved
or reduced.
Keep in mind, if you want some "chat" and rude answers try the
newsgroup soc.genealogy.britain. They actually have a few SKSs (AKA the
names that you see much less often responding to a post), but mostly
they like to "chat" on a newsgroups.
Another newsgroup that could be of interest here to the recent of GR is
soc.genealogy.ireland. I know many Irish ended up in Oz and a lots of
other areas of the world.

That's not actually true. There are times when a thread goes off
