Lookup please...

Well - I found my 2nd great grands from some documents the
church sent me... yippee!

It turns out the Henry Summe and Louisa Stricker married in
Cincinnati in 1850. They would have been about 25 in 1850.
I wonder if they made it to the US before the census...

Thanks
Liz

Did the church documents give a month and day for their marriage? I can
find a Louisa Stricker, aged 22, from Germany, living and working in the
Gibson House hotel in Cinc. in the 1850 Federal Census, but no sign of
Henry Summe. The 1900 Federal census has him immigrating in 1844, but
the 1910 looks as though he immigrated in 1833.

The official enumeration date for the 1850 was June 1, 1850, so if they
were wed prior to that date, then they should be in the census as a
couple for that year.

Let me know if you'd like the details for the Louisa Stricker.

It sounds right for Louisa - as they weren't married until
November 10, 1850... Perhaps Henry didn't arrive until
after June - what a whirwind romance that must have been...

The 1910 census probably isn't him - I think Henry died
before 1880 as Louisa was alone with the children on that
census. (indexed as Lumme). I suppose he could have left
the family but in 1876 the directory has him still in
Cincinnatti. Goodness knows how they indexed the family in
1870 census.

There is a hit for Stricker or Striker on immigrant ships -
coming from germany to New Orleans in 1844 ( an entire
family! with a home town) - Perhaps this Louisa is the same
(as the age is about right) wouldn't that be great?

So, yes please do send the details. Thank you!

take care
Liz

Here's the census info:
Year: 1850; Census Place: Cincinnati Ward 2, Hamilton, Ohio; Roll:
M432_687; Page: 173

There are waaay too many people living at the Gibson House for me to
list here, so here are just Louisa's details:

Louisa Stricker, 22, chamber maid, born in Germany

What were the names (and marriages for the girls), of Henry and Louisa's
children? It just seems very coincidental that there's that Henry Summe
in 1900 who matches exactly with age and birthplace, and very closely
with a daughter, Mary, who is in her 40s. Maybe he's a cousin of your
Henry? Or maybe Henry and Louisa were divorced and she wasn't a widow?

Like you, I've struck out on finding the family in the 1870 Federal
Census. Maybe if the children were married by then, they might be
living hear the parents?

Well, it just can't be my Mary - she somewhere else in
1900... exactly where she is supposed to be... but the other
Henry may be a relative - its too soon to tell just now, not
enough information.

Henry and Louisa had 2 sons, Henry and Hermann, but, by 1890
there is another family in Cincinatti with those same names,
and again not enough information to prove or disprove any
relationship.

So back to the 1850 - thank you so much for the look up!
She wasn't the first relative to work in a hotel or to meet
her husband in one..

take care
Liz
