Name variant needed

The official marriage record and the contemporary newspaper account
ca 1880 in Eastern W.Va. give the name of the groom as:

Fredric Guillaume of Neuchatel Switzerland.

The bride is known to be 40ish, so I'm assuming for the sake of argument
that he too is 40ish.

I've searched for Fredric, for anyone b Switzerland, for the surname as
given and as Gillum and Williams, 1880 and 1900.

ISO other alternate misspellings. (g)

The 1880 US census on the LDS page has a Fred Williams, gardener, from

Switzerland, age 40 in Baltimore. Is that your boy?

Ummm, yes. But since I'm not finding him either way, somebody misspelt
it and I can't figure out HOW. (g) And of course we get the issue of is
the French spoken in Neuchatel more like that spoken in Nice or that
spoken in Paris or that spoken in Dieppe, because _that_ would influence
what some non-francophone thought he heard ...

In french the l is nearly silent - ie Gehome or Gelhome but
handwriting is hard to translate or decipher - it could be
Solhme or Solme - I would look for all the Freds born in
Switzerland at the FamilySearch.org (1880) in or around the
state you believe he is in. You may have to look thru lots
and lots of pages.

or
Willms

take care
