I am looking for any information I can find on Lafayette Charles Cole (or
more specifically, about his father). I found this snippet of information :
Texas Death Index, 1903-2000 Record
Lafayette Charles Cole
1934- Tarrant
This is almost certainly the brother of my "brick wall" - my ggrandfather,
David Mark Cole. I have been searching for David's father's name for years.
None of the records I've found (including David's death certificate) lists
his father's name. David doesn't show up in a census until after his father
has died, so no help there. If I can find the death records of his older
brother, Lafayette, maybe I can finally tear down this wall!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Look up: Lafayette Charles Cole, Texas Death Index 1903-
You're going to have to either order the death certificate from the state of
Texas or borrow the filmed records from Salt Lake City through your local
Family History Center. The film will be cheaper and probably faster. He died
8 Feb 1934 in Tarrant Co, TX and his certificate number is 9686. I looked at
the LDS web site and found the film number you need to order:
Death records v. 14-21 cert. nos. 6900-10300 Feb. 1934, Eastland
County - Wheeler County FHL US/CAN Film
2115986
This sounded familiar to me so I searched the alt.genealogy archives and
found your messages from 2004. Did you follow up on any of the other
brothers or sisters? You might want to try for birth records in Virginia for
those 3 youngest siblings. On his WWI draft registration Claude William Cole
said he was born in Gate City, VA. That's the county seat of Scott Co, VA.
So that's another place to search. Virginia started keeping birth records in
the 1850's.

Re: Look up: Lafayette Charles Cole, Texas Death Index 1903-
If you decide to order the film, I think this is the death information for
the mother, Susan Cole.
Texas Death Index, 1903-2000 Record
about Susan Dialtha Cole
Name: Susan Dialtha Cole
Death Date: 7 Aug 1927
Death County: Collin
Certificate: 26229
And here's the microfilm roll you would order from Salt Lake City:
Death records v. 52-59 cert. nos. 25700-29131 Aug. 1927, Bexar
County - Zavala County -- v. 59 cert. nos. 29132-29200 Sep. 1927, Anderson
County - Bell County FHL US/CAN Film

Re: Look up: Lafayette Charles Cole, Texas Death Index 1903-
Hurray! I expected to order the certificate to get the name I needed (since
the lead I found was only for the index) but in my excitement of FINALLY
finding a lead on the long missing name, I forgot to mention that all I was
really looking for was the death certificate number so I could order it. The
information for Susan is a great bonus, as I did not know her specific date
of death, just that it was between 1920 and 1930. Now I can order both
certificates!
The information about Gate City helped a lot. I found a lot of new leads
that eventually increased my knowledge of that family's maternal side by 4-5
generations, but the allusive name of my ggrandfather still elluded me. This
was just a case of several life changing events happening at exactly the
wrong time. Now, I have not one, but two strong leads. Thank you!
