ProQuest Historical Newspapers?

Legg inn av Photon713 » 19 aug 2006 05:25:15

Anyone have any experience with using this resource. It is supposed
to be part of "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society."
My latest version of "Internet Genealogy" says it requires a membership
of $60 to take advantage of this resource. It indicates a complete
index of the The New York Times from 1851 to 2002. Anyone using it?

Regards...Bob

I think this is part of HeritageQuest; some county libraries have HQ
available free to their patrons. You might check into it.

Morning, Cheryl...

Yes, I checked last night through my local library. They do have access
to HeritageQuest, but, the Historical Newspapers portion was not
featured. Have you had an opportunity to use the ProQuest feature?
Did you find it useful in your genealogy research?

Thanks...Bob

Proquest Historical Newspapers is separate from HQ. Your library
might subscribe to either, both, or neither, but unlike HQ, PQHN
must be used in the library.

Note that the complete NY Times index from 1851 is available for free at
http://www.nytimes.com and is hosted by ProQuest. You must pay for the full
articles.

Hello Bob (or is that boB 8>),

On http://www.oplin.com they have Newspaper Source | (EBSCOhost) and America's
Newspapers | (NewsBank) as a research options. This is accessible from
many Ohio Library systems with your library card. It is possible that
your own state may have a similar resource.

I have used it as part of a subscription to Godfrey Library. I found it very
useful, searching for accounts about any and all with one particular surname.
Once I inspected all the hits, I haven't gone back to it for a couple years,
mainly because it is either never updated or periodic updates are never
announced. I do recall it could be quirky at times.

Ehhhh ... it produced mostly small tidbits of what I think of as
"color", nothing really big or new-n-exiting. One item was that a
certain person had earned a teaching certificate in the June
examinations. Since she married in August, I didn't see that as a major
find. Another item was that a certain man had gone off to college ...
again, not news because I already knew he was Ph.D.

Maybe the people I was hunting didn't DO anything as newsworthy as other
folks.

In my (suburban New York) library system, we can access Proquest Historical

Newspapers from home. It is an amazing research resource. -- Q

I don't use it much as my connection is so slow, but on a whim I did check
one day and found one of my guys had been arrested for murder. I thought
that was pretty interesting. :-)
