Birth Announcement Look-up hints

Legg inn av Doug Chadduck » 16 aug 2006 01:51:17

New type of "try to find" for me. A friend was born in August of 1946 in
Osh Kosh Wisconsin and my wife wants me to try to find two things. One
is a newspaper, page one, from then and the other would be her birth
announcement. I've done a bit of googling, no luck so far, but will do
more the next couple evenings. Any helpful hints out there? They'd sure
be appreciated.
We already have the Number 1 Billboard hit for her birthday and for
every 10th year since. Got the record or CD with the tunes so will give
her those. I've done a compilation CD with just the #1s. But my wife
just keeps thinking up more things for me to find.

Thanks Much Doug

You can try http://www.newspaperarchive.com or http://www.ancestry.com. If you want to
email me privately, I can look up your friend's name and see if I can find
the birth announcement for you.

This is a site that gives events that happened on a specific date:
http://www.scopesys.com/anyday/

Hope that helps.

Wives are like that <G>

Don't forget that the headlines for the day in question is actually
the news from the day before. So if you want the events that happened
on the actual birthday, you'd need the following day's news.

That's a lovely present you and your wife are giving.

There're mail-order catalogs in the US that sell those newspapers (or
more likely, sell reproductions of 'em) ... Lillian something and maybe
Spencer Gifts?

Also, Library of Congress (http://www.loc.gov ) has them and will
more-than-likely make a copy for a smallish sum.

The birth announcement -- there may not have been one; I hear lots of
births weren't announced for various reasons, including simply lack of
the urge to report to the newspaper; in that time period, the paper may
not have been getting direct-feeds from the hospital.

It's "Oshkosh". One word. This may help.

Try it as "Oshkosh" instead of "Osh Kosh".

Good point. We've tried every year to save the newspapers on our kid's
birthdays. Got most of them. Don't know if they'll appreciate them one
day or not. Oh well. Hope so.

Thank you.

I made wrapping paper by scanning the CD covers, finding some newspaper
headlines, and some Billboard Record sheets. With Adobe Elements I made
them all into a collage and printed it at 11x 17. More than plenty to
wrap a stack of music CDs.

Wish she had come up with the idea sooner. I may do some looking and

bookmarking for future reference for the next birthday that comes along.
Life is a whirlwind right now with a trip coming up and school
starting right after etc etc. Looking forward to about three weeks from
now when we can start settling into a new routine since summer will be
over, school/kid wise anyhow.

DOH

Sound of hand slapping forhead.
Wrote it just like wife did and didn't even think about it.
Forgot to engage brain before proceeding.
Oh well.

Don't sweat it. On any given day, I drive past Oconomowoc, through
Waukesha, and to Wauwatosa. Vacations in Ashwabenon or maybe Manitowoc.
Compared to these, Oshkosh is pretty tame, naming-wise. We have an
interesting set of town names around here. Then again I live within
biking distance of Whitewater, Watertown, Waterville, and Johnson Creek.

Probably but not until they have children of their own who are old
enough to start asking "what was it like in the olden days?" and "did
you meet Wyatt Earp?" ;))

That's clever!! Very original :))
